With Secure View Enabled for all shares / certain groups, since Nextcloud I am unable to sync them on my laptop/desktop using the Nextcloud Files Client. It shows an error for all my office files and PDF, which were syncing seamlessly before. This error seems new to me, I did not have this issue yesterday, 16 June 2025.
I have enabled daily backups which would have updated Nextcloud Hub 10 (31.0.5) on AIO v11.0.0 automatically.
Looks like this banner sums it up (found on the landing page of Nextcloud community forum) The previous behaviour was WRONG, and now, this has broken things, even though it is a FIX! ugh!
Desktop files client 3.16.5 known issue: slow remote discovery on the first run
In the previous versions the permissions reported by the server were not correctly taken into account. It would fail to detect read only files and it would try to download files without the download permission.
3.16.5 includes a fix for the handling of files permissions. The consequence of it is that the client will need to execute a full remote discovery during the first run to check for the correct permissions and update the files status accordingly. The discovery time might be slow depending on your server settings, on the number of folders and files and on the speed of the network between the client and the server.
The recommendation is still to upgrade to 3.16.5 because there are other bug fixes included in this version that might benefit you. In the meantime, we are working on improving the user experience on the first run.
Even trying to delete tagged files which have secure view gives an error message that the file can’t be deleted, unless the tag is removed, then the file can be deleted.
What makes this change more inconsistent is that the “Details” Pane, allows files tagged as CONFIDENTIAL (which enforces Secure View on them) to be downloadable and synced on clients. In the image below, the file annotated with a green tick mark continues to sync on clients even though it has Secure view (this was the behavior before, but users did not have to share the file to make this happen)
Okay another thing that’s happening for docs with Secure View is that I can no longer see version history. I have checked with several files that were tagged to enforce Secure View, they no longer have version history. If I remove the tag that enforces Secure View, it starts recording version history as if the latest version is the 1st version.
