External storage as "SMB/CIFS" vs "local" (using mounted share) performance?

Is there any difference between adding an external storage using the “SMB / CIFS” option, or using “local” and mounting the share directly at the OS level? This is a mount to a windows UNC path. Is performance the same or is one faster or more efficient between these two options? Thanks.

If you are able to use the latter option, I’d alway recommend to use that since there will be much less potential bugs that could come up.

At least using external SMB storage is not a good idea - external-storage-app-extremely-slow-down-the-system

I have no personal experience but I recall somebody reported similar issue with external local storage…
