Support intro

Sorry to hear you’re facing problems. :slightly_frowning_face:

The community help forum (help.nextcloud.com) is for home and non-enterprise users. Support is provided by other community members on a best effort / “as available” basis. All of those responding are volunteering their time to help you.

If you’re using Nextcloud in a business/critical setting, paid and SLA-based support services can be accessed via portal.nextcloud.com where Nextcloud engineers can help ensure your business keeps running smoothly.

Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 31.05
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Ubuntu 24.04
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • replace me
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • replace me
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • replace me
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • replace me
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • long ago
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • AIO
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • no

Summary of the issue you are facing:

[logs are clogged by exceptions from passwords app]

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. I do not know. Seems to happen all the time. I even exported and reimported my passwords

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

You have an issue with the file permissions in your data directory. There should be a directory /appdata_oc3affwtw3qo/passwords/passwordsCache/ in the Nextcloud data directory but either it’s missing or the webserver/cron has no permission to write or read from this directory.

Right, but then: These errors come from erroneous programs and data within AIO.
That’s a black box except for developers.

Depends.

How is your data directory conducted in AIO? Post your Compose file.

These errors are likely not a result of an issue within Nextcloud or the Passwords app, but an issue with the access to the Nextcloud data directory where app data and user data is stored on your Server.

Your post contains two specific errors. First one is “No such file or directory” which means that a file that was created trough Nextctloud is no longer there and the second one is “Could not create path” with “NotPermittedException” which suggests that Nextcloud is not allowed to create a file in the passwordsCache folder.

So check the files in the Nextcloud Data directory, ensure that the folders do have the right permissions for Nextcloud to access and write to them. Then run sudo docker exec --user www-data -it nextcloud-aio-nextcloud php occ files:scan-app-data to update the file cache within Nextcloud.

Make sure that your Nextcloud cron jobs are run with the same user and permissions as the Webserver.

Also, Nextcloud, the passwords app and AIO are all open source. That’s the opposite of a black box.

@mdw Thanks for your help.
As for the black box, I am complaining as a user of nextcloud-all-in-one, which works out of the (black) box and should so.

As an aio-user I never did and normally never would fiddle with file permissions inside my instance’s docker container. All the issues mentioned are under aio‘s control … imho.

All I had to to do with NEXTCLOUD_DATADIR, was passing a name parameter of an empty directory to docker. The system has been running for a half a year.

But will check the issues you mentioned in order to help developers find out, how these errors could come up.

As for a compose.yaml …
I used the command from the aio readme without tweaks

sudo docker run
–init
–sig-proxy=false
–name nextcloud-aio-mastercontainer
–restart always
–publish 80:80
–publish 8080:8080
–publish 8443:8443
–volume nextcloud_aio_mastercontainer:/mnt/docker-aio-config
–volume /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock:ro

What did help

was changing the option for external password security checks from “Have I been pwned” to “kleine lokale Datenbank”

without me having to fiddle with the internals of AIO containers.

So is the error still resolved or did it come back at some point?

It returned

Ok. Not really that surprised since all password check services use the same code, the one you chose just needs a day or so to download the database.

First thing you can try is to go into the admin settings and clear every cache there. Then reload the page and check if the caches have been emptied (1 file or less).

If that didn’t work, since you don’t seem to have mapped the data volume anywhere, lets go into your container and try to delete things there:

# Go into the container.
docker exec -it nextcloud-aio-mastercontainer bash

# Go into the data directory.
cd /mnt/ncdata

# Look at the permissions for "appdata_oc3affwtw3qo". If the folder is not owned by "www-data", stop here and report back.
ls -l

# If everything is fine, go into the appdata directory.
cd appdata_oc3affwtw3qo

# Look at the permissions. The folder passwords should be owned by www-data.
ls -l

# If the folder "passwords" isn't owned by www-data, delete it.
rm -r passwords

# Check that its gone and exit.
ls -l
exit

# Now let Nextcloud scan the appdata directory.
docker exec -itu www-data nextcloud-aio-mastercontainer php ./occ files:scan-app-data

I think this needs to be sudo docker exec -it nextcloud-aio-nextcloud bash as all the Nextcloud stuff runs in that one and not in the mastercontainer which only manages the sibking containers.
