MacOS Desktop VFS client 4.0.6 have multiple Sync issues, reported on Github and actively worked-on right now. Thanks to @iva.horn who take care of most (if not all) of it and reviewing every reported issues with care.
But since thoses bugs can lead to data-loss, or a broken sync that stop to update files/folders, current version 4.0.6 was looking too hasardous to use (and it seems it’s all the 4.x branch)
I decided to downgrade to version 3.16.6, but it bring a new problem: Sharing function in Finder doesn’t work.
So, I would know if we could get an estimation of when a new release will be published.
I don’t want to put any pressure, take your time, we need a working and stable new version.
But I would really appreciate to know if it’s a matter of days, weeks, or months
Not a promise, just an estimate ^^
There are no official fixed announced release dates for the client. You can see the milestones, which issues are attributed to this milestone and follow up how they are resolved:
You can also check the history of last releases, so there is usually one release every month or so.
Since you have already the bug reports, you can follow up the fixes. I suppose they are added to the milestones once they see a solution. As a user, you can just wait, check the progress, sometimes they provide builds with fixes, if you are concerned by the bugs you can help and test these builds. However these are just testing versions (not to be used in production). I suppose once they come up with test builds, and that starts to work fine, it might be a matter of a few weeks to get it shipped with the next release.
Still, it might take longer, if there are other complications/priorities, it could be faster, if they have a larger customer that pushes this feature.

We aim for the range of days to a few weeks after the next major server release. We are about to wrap it up but there are few important things left before we can start with release candidates.

Improving our transparency, release process and establishing something like a schedule with regard to the one of Nextcloud server to also manage user and customer expectations is a topic internally and we will try things out. It would be great to have a more predictable cycle, also for us in planning.

Since last year, a lot of work was invested into the foundation and stabilization of the macOS file provider extension. Also in the enablement of efficient workflows for contributors. It might not be obvious to users, but a whole category of root causes for broken client setups was eliminated by the introduction of unique identifiers for file provider domains, as an example. Or the introduction of a completely new logging which enables much clearer insights and faster action on the troubles of our users and customers.
Such fundamental improvements bring us on a good track. Also, I joined the desktop client team last summer. I needed some time to familiarize myself with this specific, complicated and mature Qt project. On the other hand, Apple file providers are my field of expertise since years already. I write with confidence that our macOS file provider extension will not just improve notably but do so faster as well in the foreseeable future. All planes need a little time to taxi to the runway before take-off first.
