Email client: logo shown next to sender

Hello there,

I’ve been wondering how/why the mail clients shows logos next to the sender address.

I’m aware of the existence of BIMI, all domains that have a BIMI entry are shown with the corresponding logo.

But I have a couple of domains that do not publish BIMI entries but nevertheless a logo is shown.

These are favicons. I assume it’s just grabbing them from the websites of the respective domain names from which the messages were sent, e.g. https://letsencrypt.org/favicon.ico.

You can disable this under Mail Preferences → General → Gravatar Preferences → Use gravatar and favicon avatars.
