Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

I think you have to decide if you really want to run a Nextcloud instance.
I know that more and more YouTubers and Influencers sell you the lie that hosting your own data on Nextcloud is just a few clicks without any maintenance.
This is a huge lie. It isn’t!

The same is true for those sleazy “Just buy our super secure and simple hardware” kickstarter projects that to not much more then resell you expensive hardware. Without knowing anything about Start9 and just glancing at their webpage, I would put them in that category.

Now you pretty much have to decide if you really want to continue to host Nextcloud. If that is the case, you have to read up on A LOT of things! This isn’t a personal attack but based on your writing (not knowing where to update, not knowing where to check for php version) there is my opinion too big of a knowledge gap right now to host Nextcloud. But hey, you can change that if you want

Anyway, if you want to continue you should probably start by posting which method or which tutorial you used to install Nextcloud.

NC 27 went out of support in June last year. And you are not even on the latest release (27.1.11). The minor releases contain a lot of bug fixes and security fixes. Regarding security, you should not neglect this on public servers, here you can see a few things that were fixed recently:

and your setup is probably vulnerable to some of these publicly known issues!

1-2 times a year, you need to upgrade to new major versions. They can be more tricky since the dependencies might differ (require different php versions, some apps might not be compatible yet, …).

This comes as a package or something in their system? Are there ways to update these packages? You need to check this with them how they considered doing the upgrades, if that is just to the Nextcloud internal update/upgrade mechanism, or if they implemented this on a package/system level on their side already. If they implemented it, you should avoid upgrading in different ways since this could mess up everything.

I just found on their marketplace an app for Nextcloud:

but this still ships 27.1.7, this is old!

They have a community forum with Nextcloud question, but nothing regarding upgrades:

I created a bug report on their repository linked to this app:

after all that’s being correctly said here I’d like to chime in with a suggestion.

If you are too lazy to upgrade or if that simply means too much trouble to you why not trying to run Nextcloud All-in-one (referred to as AiO, mostly).
This is a pretty well maintained offical version from NC itself for ppl who want to make their lives easier when selfhosting such a demanding software-collection as NC is.
It runs on docker and its installing process is pretty much well-explained. It gives you a secure and pretty easy to handle NC at home.
And the best: you can import all your old settings and data to the new NC-server… the manual is going to tell yoi how you can do that.

Apart from that your question was: Do I need to actually update?
Well you are the owner of your server and it’s data. It’s up to you to decide what to do with it. There’s nobody forcing you to update.
but just imagine: if you leave your house you usually would take good care about closing your door and locking it. Why don’t you do that with your NC? i mean you do lock the frontdoor but the older it gets the more insecure it’ll become, maybe opening up some not-so-secret backdoors to let some unwanted visitors in (with them knowing where to look for the open doors).
So I wouldn’t really recommend staying on a version that has reached EOL for such a long time, already.

Well, if you have an app/package within a system, you should expect that this app can be easily updated.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a Start9 platform matter. None of us can directly remedy it.

CasaOS has a similar problem at the moment.

These platforms offer convenience (via their in-project app stores), but unfortunately the quantity of apps their maintainers/contributors are then responsible for keeping updated for their user base is likely overwhelming.

These projects need more people to step up and help them keep those conveniently bundled apps up-to-date. Ideally someone that uses the platform in question + uses the packaged app.

Hi Saettel,

Here’s the dropbox link to the [manual] (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/3rd6zrx4vcr1c63wsle97/Nextcloud-Manual.pdf?rlkey=dv26ghtq7e5oqwppneutm0nif&dl=0)

I’m confused. The only thing that I did was to go to the Start9 Registry/Marketplace and find Nextcloud (stay with the default settings) Save and exit.

I just want to make sure that this “update” applies to how I’m currently using this app as managed by Start9.

Thanks

I agree. I’ll confirm with them (Start9) asap!!!

Seems like Start9 is doing a horrible job and nobody should use their market place then.
I would either go with Docker (Nextcloud AIO) or follow this tutorial for a bare metal installation on Ubuntu.

These projects should die and not exist in the first place. It always ends like this and is a waste of everyones time.

There is a reason why the well maintained Nextcloud AIO or even automatic install scripts exist.
I personally like bare metal even more, because it puts the power into the users hand to tweak it and also understand better what is actually happening.

Ok, update from Start9.

Hi Monty,

All updates to services that are specifically packaged for StartOS are installed via StartOS’s own user interface only. Any messaging within services that connect to the internet to look for later versions then provide instructions to manually update do not apply to you. You only need to be concerned about updates from StartOS.

That said, specific plugins to different services may need to be updated within the StartOS packaged services. Nextcloud is one service that has plugins called “apps” which you do need to keep on top of if you have any… StartOS isn’t able to see or manage those.

Stuart

I’m satisfied with Stuart’s response. It seems to be simple and straight-forward and right to-the-point.

Nextcloud should warn all users of servers like Start9, etc. that we absolutely do not need to be concerned about downloading updates if we aren’t using Nextcloud directly from the company as this could cause issues!!!

The issue is that Start9 is distributing a version of Nextcloud Server that has reached end-of-life, has security vulnerabilities, and is completely unsupported.

Nextcloud should warn all users of servers like Start9, etc. that we absolutely do not need to be concerned about downloading updates if we aren’t using Nextcloud directly from the company as this could cause issues!!!

Half accurate. If using an image (which is what Start9 is doing), yes, the update should be performed using their mechanism. As for the “warn all users” that is already the case today (I literally wrote the code that handles that). However it requires two things:

  • a somewhat current version (>=v29)
  • the image builder to use upgrade.disable-web [this is already handled in Start9’s case since they derive them image from the Nextcloud micro-services image which has done this by default since 12/2023)

Noted…

I also passed along the information you guys shared about the outdated and unsupported version of Nextcloud as well.

Thanks,

Monty

and putting @jtr 's always valued comments into consideration it’s simply impossible for NC to “warn” everyone.

As @jtr said from NC’s side you’re as safe as it only can get. But that doesn’t neccessarily mean a thing if the provider can’t cope or doesn’t want to cope with it.

Walking in your shoes I, personally, would leave the mentioned provider and look for another one.

My 50 cents on the matter is actually quite simple. Don’t use those ‘pseudo’ OSS platforms that are trying to make a quick buck off the current homelab trend, in this case by distributing crypto mining apps.

To be fair, many of the issues mentioned in this thread exist to some extent with all platforms that promise one-click installation of OSS applications, but these ‘pseudo OSS’ platforms and operating systems from Chinese hardware manufacturers such as Ugreen, Terramaster, Zima, etc. are particularly bad imho.

They all might be able to develop a fancy Apple iOS-like store frontend and a fancy website, but the maintenance of all the apps usually doesn’t work out all that well, because it’s just a hell of a lot of work that doesn’t directly generate any revenue for them (with Start9, it looks like the included crypto apps are supposed to provide the funding), which is why you can mostly forget about platforms like Start9, CasaOS, but also the app stores on NAS systems from UGreen, Terramaster, etc.

However, at least with most of these NAS systems or the Zimaboards it is possible to install a different OS, like OpenMediaVault, TrueNAS or Unraid, where you then can use standard Docker images and on the latter two also VMs, or you could install an actual hypervisor like Proxmox VE.

For what it’s worth, I believe Start9/CasaOS do support the use of Docker images/Compose files directly. However at that point it kind of changes the appeal of the platform I suppose (since that means the end-user has to be comfortable going that path to manage their apps stack).

Yes, and then it’s not that far to docker compose on the command line, which I’d say is even easier to manage than the sub-par UIs in TrueNAS or OMV

Or why not AIO in a VM or if that’s too complicated on baremetal with Docker Desktop (no, please don’t do the latter  )

And sorry, if people can’t even manage installing AIO, then they should seriously reconsider whether they really want to host Nextcloud themselves. Self-hosting relatively complex server application like Nextcloud will always be more diffcult and more time-consuming to learn and maintain than an installling and using an iOS app, even if the app stores of CasaOS or Start9 suggest otherwise
