Desktop client 4.x branch under Windows 11 unreliable for limited rights user

I’ve been using Nextcloud for quite a while. Every since the upgrade to the 4.x branch of the desktop client, the systeem is unreliable.

Basically what happens is this. I have a pc with two users: 1 administrator and 1 limited user account. A rather basic setup I would think, also taking account basic security steps.

The thing is: the Nextcloud client only runs only once on the limited user account. Whereas it runs perfectly fine over and over again on the user with administrator rights. So I keep setting up the account and syncing the folders over and over again (each time a new location on the hard drive….), to discover that after a reboot the client simply does not function anymore.

According to task manager it is up and running in the limited user, however… there is no task bar icon, also not after restarting the client via the start menu. Killing the client via the task manager and restarting it has the same effect: running according to task manager, but nothing visible.

Once I delete (rename) the Nextcloud folders in the appdata local and roaming folder, the client runs perfectly fine and asks to setup the server. To subsequently stop working after one reboot. And then the cycle has been completed once again…..

I’ve reinstalled the client a few times already, including deleting/renaming the appdata folders (both local and roaming).

The 3.x branch of the client software ran perfectly fine. What is going on here and what can I do to fix this? Or what can you do to fix the bug that might be present?

Please let me know if you need additional info. Thanks for all the help.

you can run the client from command line by logging everything to a file (more options and details: Troubleshooting — Nextcloud latest Administration Manual latest documentation):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Nextcloud\nextcloud.exe --logfile <file>

Hopefully this will give you are more detailed error you can then look for.

I found something for actual crashes ([Bug]: 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 crashes · Issue #9025 · nextcloud/desktop · GitHub) but it seems a bit different since your client is still running. Does it still sync when it is not visible in the task bar?

Thansk for the reply, I will try it with loggong and see what happens.

Sometimes the client appears very much delayed in the task bar.
