Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x): v32
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04): Debian 12
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25): unknown
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2): none
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3): PHP 8.2
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No): No
  • When did this problem seem to first start? first time I wanted to share to external users
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.): don’t remember
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No) No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I’d like to create login + pwd for external users to my Nextcloud instance when sharing a folder. Ex. give access to a documents exchange folder both to customers employees and my own team. It seems that only a global sharing password is allowed.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. When sharing a folder, I add a new email address, thus creating a new user for this sharing (external customer).

  2. I click on the new user’s menu, customize their access rights (ex. add and modify), click on the “Protect with password” checkbox and enter the new password I’ve created for the user.

  3. I copy the link to the shared folder and send it to the new external user.

  4. When the user clicks on the link, they land on a page where only the password is requested. They don’t have to enter their login (i.e. email address) and their custom password.
