"Could not create path" error

Nextcloud version 29.0.0 (AIO)
Operating system and version Ubuntu 24.04

I get multiple errors of Could not create path.
The client has synced most of the files but dumps the above error for some.
The file extensions are mostly .lnk, but also others such as .py, .txt or .tex.
I had already added .lnk files in the client ignore list but .lnk files still show up as errors so it seems like it still tries to sync it.
I had run already the following commands trying to fix the issue without success:
occ files:scan --all
occ files:cleanup
occ files:repair-tree
occ files:scan-app-data
Mutliple attempts forcing the client to sync had neither resolved it .
I have checked some of the mentioned paths if they exist. They do and files were synced here without problem.
In the screenshot below, I censored the paths but left two examples visible .

Steps to replicate it:

  1. Load files to sync into server directly
  2. Run occ scan:files --all
  3. Launch client to sync
  4. Perhaps modify some files during step 3

Did these have /files/ after /admin as the first part of the the path before you edited them?

The line of code this is hitting is a fairly standard PHP file_puts_contents() call. The error suggests a permission problem.

Anything special about how you’re mounting /mnt/ncdata into the container or running your Docker environment (i.e. rootless)? What about file ownership?

The error is coming up when trying to write to those paths on the server-side. It’s possible they’re readable, which might explain why you’re seeing them sync’d alright I guess.

Yes.

I made a standard AIO installation and set /mnt/ncdata as the parent directory of my files to be synced. I didn’t modify file ownership.

I had read before that .lnk files are for some reason generally an issue. So apart from these, the files which make problems seem to be such which I modified while the synchronization was done. So an older version of these are on the server and writing the new version can’t be done it seems.

I checked the permissions of some of the problematic folders and they are all drwxrwxr-x; files have -rw-rw-r-- . Owner is the Raspberry Pi user (which is different to admin from NC).

Well, it looks like the files don’t even get written to the server. So I can only check the owners of the old file on the server or files which do not cause an error (means, which I haven’t modified yet on the local machine).

The parent main folder which contains all sub-folders is called HiDrive with permissions drwxr-xr-x. Same for the folder ncdata.
All sub-folders have the permissions drwxrwxr-x and all files -rw-rw-r--.

I installed Nextcloud AIO normally.

I remember that I set up a remote access key. They are added to the known_hosts in Windows and to the authorized_keys on the server. Could here be the problem?

Meanwhile some other error showed up which seems like related, saying \Sabre\DAV\Exception\Forbidden and that it cannot copy the file:

Edit: I tried to upload a file through the Nextcloud browser interface. It works for the main sync folder (under ncdata/admin/files) but not for /ncdata/admin/files/HiDrive, it then dumps a message saying

which says that the process was blocked though the access control.

have you find a solution to your issue ?

I had the exact same problem here with the exact same bug and exception raised… and we should have more or less a same configuration (raspberry & drive connected to it)

No, I couldn’t solve it.
Went for another re-installation and had to sync it from the bottom up and it is still very bitchy. I felt with this guy:

hopefully good news for anyone who finds this, I had the same issue and realised it was because my main nextcloud data folder was owned by root:root which is good, but some of the folders I had copied in were owned by my user e.g. user:user

i did chown -R root:root /media/nextcloud (your nextcloud data directory) and now the desktop app doesnt have issues writing to the folders
