Cannot read PDF and .txt files

  • Nextcloud Desktop Client Version 3.16.2
  • Ubuntu 24.04
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • Yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • After installing Nextcloud Desktop

Summary of the issue:

After installing Nextcloud Desktop in a new laptop with Ubuntu 24.04 and synchronizing all my files, I can’t read my PDF, .txt and .R files anymore - there is a message starting HBEGIN:oc_encryption_module:OC_DEFAULT_MODULE:cipher:AES-256-CTR:signed:true:HEND. What can I do to recover all my data?

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Install Ubuntu 24.04
  2. Install Nextcloud Desktop
  3. Synchronize your files

The error message indicates that you are using server-side encryption and that this is causing the problems. Can you provide further details? Are you using server-side encryption? Remember that server-side encryption does not protect the data on the server. It is only helpful if other sources such as AWS or Microsoft are integrated as external storage in the Nextcloud.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

How can I know if I’m using a server-side encryption? I’m afraid I don’t know whether I’m using it or not.

You can find some information here. With server side encryption you can not direct read the files /path/to/nextcloud/data/username/files with a file browser. Although this is also the case with E2EE.

I’m lost, however, I appreciate your guidance.

It turns out that I don’t have encrypted my files yet I can’t open them on the new computer.

The error message indicates an encryption problem. Perhaps you can simply reinstall the client. Also delete all current configurations. You may also want to check the settings afterwards. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Does it help to say that a have a free account within tab.digital? I simple can’t turn off server-side encryption :frowning:

Yes, thats helps, because similar issues habe already been reported be other users. If you would have search the forum for “tab.digital encription” you would have found this thread. You should contact tab.digital and ask them to recover your files:
