Can no longer see sync stats in taskbar on Desktop 4.0.0

I only see the Nextcloud icon now in my dashboard instead of the checkmark confirming that my last sync was correct. Is this now the default icon for correct syncs?

Additionally when syncing the icon is so small on my 1440p display that it’s hard to see.

Same here. Updated to client v4.0.0 yesterday, and first thing I noticed: no green checkmark icon anymore (indicating successful sync), instead just the blue NC icon on the taskbar.

I also would like to know if that is a bug or intentional. If the later is the case I see no point in having the icon in the taskbar (doesn’t indicate anything).

(Just in case it’s relevant: server Linux, client MacOS)

Maybe https://github.com/nextcloud/desktop/issues/8913 ?

Did the checkmark go missing right after you updated to v4.0.0?

Not sure what you mean by “right after". I usually don’t immediately check the tray icon after an update of the client. However, I noticed it “soon after” the update. Does that qualify as “right after"?

btw: restarting the client doesn’t help. Even clicking on “sync now" there is for a fraction of a second something happening in the lower right of the icon, but its too quick to identify.

EDIT: I tried to verify the behaviour on two macs, and to my surprise, only 3.17.3 is offered via the update button in settings. When installed, it just says its up to date. (and yes, all are on the stable channel - as always)
And, also the website seems to offer no 4.0.0 either.

Via https://nextcloud.com/install/#desktop-files I get the download link for my desktop client: https://github.com/nextcloud-releases/desktop/releases/download/v3.17.3/Nextcloud-3.17.3.pkg which is also referring to v3.17.3

So, I try to adjust the direct link to 4.0.0: https://github.com/nextcloud-releases/desktop/releases/download/v4.0.0/Nextcloud-4.0.0.pkg
Which does in fact exist, AND… to my surprise, it has the label “Pre-release".

In fact 3.17.3 has the label “Latest".

My conclusion: I downloaded 3.17.3 again, to downgrade. (Note: Somehow I had to manually delete the v4.0.0 client. Though the installer for 3.17.3 claimed success, v4.0.0 remained.)

I assume they noticed the 4.0.0 is not yet ready, or maybe it was accidentally labeled latest such that it popped up as “there is a new version" and I just installed it as usual.

Lesson learned: Don’t install a major version step if its still a .0.0

tldr: Remove 4.0.0 and install the latest version (3.17.3) from the website again, the the tray icon behaviour is again as it used to be. (Status: 23. October 2025)

Update 29. October:

I just got v4.0.1 offered via the autoupdate. And the taskbar Icon is yet again permanently showing the Nextcloud icon only. However, when I click on sync now in the menu, the icon shorty shows the green hook in the bottom right quarter of the tray icon. BUT it is sooo tiny, it’s hardly visible. And even worse, the hook disappears after sync, so one must open the menu to see the sync status.

Ergo, it seems to me - sadly - that this change of the tray icon was done intentionally.

I guess I will yet again install the v3.17.3.

Where I can I give feedback, that this change is bad???

  1. One must click and open the menu to see the current sync status
  2. Even when the hook is shown, it is way too tiny
  3. This is clearly worse than in previous versions

just my 2 cent.

See link to Github above

Thx, found a similar one already.

IMHO, this is a change for the worse. And I definitely want the old Icon back.

This definitely introduces a loss of functionality. It replaces an informative icon (easy enough to identify at a glance, with a color that clearly indicates status) with a logo icon that communicates only that (probably) the NextCloud client is installed. The NextCloud logo is nearly too small to read at this size (especially when partially obscured), so the only way it’s identifiable is its cyan color… which communicates nothing beyond “I am probably NextCloud”.

And then we get down the quantum level: I can see that there’s some kind of tiny circular sub-icon in the lower right corner of that icon. But even if I replace my computer-reading glasses with the ones I use for precision soldering, I cannot tell what symbol that tiny cluster of pixels is intended to be, let alone guess what status it might be intended to indicate.

I assume this change was intended to improve branding, but doesn’t even accomplish that. I’ve reinstalled 3.17.3.

I took one of their preliminary design ideas (discarded because it didn’t have NextCloud branding), and tried a couple possibilities that would retain some of the readability of the old ones, using color and clearer symbols to indicate status.
