I have an older server that is x86 / 32-bit only
if it is possible, are there any drawbacks to doing a 32-bit install? example: are there any add-ons that aren’t available to 32-bit installs?

Yes, the main limitation are due to large files (> 2GB) in PHP. At some time, there should be a work around for that but I don’t know if that works properly or perhaps needs some special configuration since a few reports popped up after the announced fix.
