AVIF files considered images - web and apps

Will it ever be possible to use Nextcloud to store AVIF images as images?

I use the AVIF format extensively on my websites, and Wordpress is happy with it, but in Nextcloud where I have all my files, the AVIF images are not recognised as files.

There’s no preview, and on mobile I cannot pick AVIF files when I need an image. They’re just ignored.

Github is full of various issues related to AVIF support, but they all seem to focus on specific sub-elements.

I would like AVIF to be treated just like any other supported image format, on web and on mobile apps.

**What file type** image/avif **What application is using it** Not too many… yet. **Please attach a sample file here** (or a direct external link to one) [avif sample file](https://kagami.github.io/avif.js/Mexico.5f45d60c.avif) Browser support isn't full yet but there's https://github.com/Kagami/avif.js for instance which works just fine. AVIF-compressed files can also be embedded inside HEIF containers so support might also be added as part of #4

Right now we serve previews in png or jpg. Which has the advantage of being supp…ort on nearly every platform since the late 90s. But of course it is no longer the best solution out there. I would propose to allow different image formats. The top candidate in my opinion is webp. This allows for smaller images at comparable quality. Of course the backend would need to distinquis what to server but I'm sure we can solve that with some js magic to set the accept headers ;) This doesn't mean we fully get rid of the jpg an png as older firefox and IE versions do not support it. But I bet this could be performance boost especially when using a lot of images.
