Auto Upload Not working (still)

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 31.0.7
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian 12.11
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • apache2 2.4.62 (from debian repo)
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • none
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.2.28 (debian repo)
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • No
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • It has been on and off since google took away the permissions
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Archive
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • Cloudflare and local LAN

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Auto Upload of Camera folder(s) not working with nextcloud android client version 3.32.0.

I’ve set all relevant permissions I could find (yes, even the “special access”) and the app simply refuses to auto upload consistently anymore.

Sometimes it will auto upload a new picture, but it usually it doesn’t.

This happens even on my home LAN with the Nextcloud server being local to the phone where there is no Cloudflare in the way.

I’ve also turned off the Cloudflare proxy to test this and it does make a difference.

Only the android systems seem to be affected by this, desktop systems (both Linux and Windows) do not seem to be affected at all.

I am at a loss for anything else to check and am about to give up on Nextcloud after many many years.

Log entries

Nothing in the logs on the nextcloud server, the web server, and no idea how to get to client logs on android.

To add: If I manually “share” a photo with Nextcloud I can upload the image without issue, regardless if I am on my Home Network or out on the Internet.
Manual uploading also works with Cloudflare enabled or not.

There must be something I am missing.

I started using this functionality last week and have been experiencing the same issue. Sometimes the upload works, sometimes it doesn’t work at all, and other times it only uploads a few files instead of all of them. I haven’t been able to identify any pattern in when it works partially or fails completely.

Hi I have a very similar setup to ride above Debian 12 with NC 31.0.9 php 8.3. I have clients on Linux (debian and Ubuntu), MacOS, iPhone (my phone), and Android (wife’s phone). Autoupload works on all but Android, iPhone has had some problems but mostly works. I can’t put a dev build on the Android phone for obvious reasons which means I can’t get any logs from the client. I can’t see anything in the server logs it just looks like it never tries to upload any photos unless I manually select them for upload. Any ideas on how to debug this would be great.

Why couldn’t you install a dev build?

Same here. Currently, it works flawlessly most of the time. However, I can’t trust the feature anymore since from time to time some files are omitted. And yes, I also can’t see any pattern in the behaviour of the erratic sync feature.

It is my Wife’s phone so I don’t want to install F-Droid and then the dev version. I have an iPhone and that mostly works. Some times the App stops running and I have to restart it. I have a Pixel on order so I will have a play with the Android app then.

Also can confirm this is still not working correctly. I’m running GraphineOS on Pixel 8 and auto upload just stopped working after an android update - currently running Android 16 build 2026012100, but it may have happened earlier.

I have tried re-installing the app, disabling battery management etc. I can manually upload photos just fine, Auto will not work at all now.

Would really like this to work, as this is the primary reason I like nextcloud to keep my photos safe! Thanks for any help.

same issue here, reply to keep this open.

I’m running into the same issue. Everything seems to work correctly, except the auto upload on my Android phone. To be clear, it’s only the auto upload that doesn’t work. If I add something through the app, it uploads instantly without any issues.

I want to use NextCloud as a replacement for my Dropbox subscription, but without auto upload, that’s a dealbreaker for that.
