I’m still fine-tuning my Nextcloud install and so far, it’s running very well. However, I’d really like some Google Photos type features like facial recognition, albums, search by place or object. Even if these features exist, the follow-up question would be is there a phone app companion to more advanced features? There doesn’t seem to be much going on here in regard to the photos section.

There are also third party platforms you can self host and connect to such as Photoprism.
