App Music : Feature ideas / possible contribution

Feature ideas / possible contribution

First of all, thank you for the work already done on this app — I use it every day on my self-hosted Nextcloud instance and really appreciate it.

I started conceptualizing a few improvements for my own usage and quickly realized these are probably fairly common feature requests that could benefit many users. You may also already have some of these ideas planned for future versions, so I wanted to ask before going too far on my side.

My primary motivation is related to music production workflows. As a composer, I use the app to organize and share “work” playlists with collaborators, and I often rely heavily on the existing folder tree structure to navigate projects quickly.

Because of that, my main feature request would be:

  • Sorting by added/import date directly inside the existing folder tree structure

    • Folders

    • Albums

    • Tracks

    • Possibly artists/playlists when relevant

The goal would really be to keep the current file-tree-oriented workflow while making it easier to immediately find the latest imported material inside large project libraries.

Another closely related feature idea would be:

  • Favorites support

    • Ability to favorite folders directly from the library tree

    • Favorite albums

    • Favorite artists

    • Possibly favorite tracks/playlists as well

For me, the original intended workflow would actually be:

  • favorite a project/work folder,

  • then sort its content by recently added material.

I also had a few additional ideas:

  • Recently added section

  • Multi-select playlist management

    • Basic checkbox selection mode

    • Add multiple tracks to playlists at once

    • Potentially batch actions later

I already run a local Nextcloud Music instance and would be happy to contribute these features upstream if they fit the project direction.

Before implementing everything fully, I’d be interested to know:

  • whether these features align with the current roadmap/philosophy,

  • whether similar work is already in progress,

  • and if there are any architectural constraints or preferred approaches I should follow.

Thanks again for the project and all the work behind it.

Hello @Voualla!

It is nice to hear that new people are interested in supporting community projects :tada:!

Generally, I cannot tell you if the maintainer(s) of the music app are currently visiting the forums on regular intervals. Thus, I do not know if your request will be heard by the right people out there.

I would like to give the advice to open a ticket/issue on the corresponding issue tracker. Probably, a link to this topic and 1-2 sentences should be enough. Posting a link here to the issue is also a good idea. Let’s see if you can reach them.

Christian

Thank you for your answer & advices :folded_hands:

Is it possible to post an issue with a tag to mention it is not a problem but really an idea of feature.

I didn’t want to annoy developpers by putting it the weong way haha

I wanted to put it in the github corresponding repository as a feature request, but I did not find it

You find it on the online app store (apps.nextcloud.com) when you visit the corresponding app. In case of the music app there is this kind of meta data:

The actual issue track is to be found on GitHub: https://github.com/nc-music/music/issues

I hope this helps.
