Am I being scammed at tab.digital?

I’ve been using a free server at tab.digital for a few years.

Today, I received a message stating that their url is changing from

liv.nl.tab.digital

to

liv.nl.tabdigital.cloud

I can’t find any mention of it other than my email which showed up in spam. There’s an inaccessible warning in my NextCloud app that showed up 7 hours ago and nothing is syncing.

I have received no other communications from tab.digital, ever, much less anything telling me about this event.

I know you get what you pay for but, if they could send that email, they could have sent one earlier and at least put up a banner on their website.

Is it legitimate?

This is simply a free service. No service can be expected from it. That’s why we don’t offer such things. Data should be sacred to everyone. Conclusion: With a free service, you have to be able to tolerate such things.

Well - just by checking the DNS records you can see, that this change indeed happend:

liv.nl.tab.digital
NXDOMAIN (domain does not exist)

liv.nl.tabdigital.cloud
liv.nl.tabdigital.cloud. 193 IN A 104.21.41.249
liv.nl.tabdigital.cloud. 193 IN A 172.67.196.244

So yes, this change seems to be legit.

However, when seeing the login form there - this is really slow and the version seems to be quite limited. A typical ā€œyou get it for free, so take it or leave itā€ service.

You get much better and reliable service from providers like Hetzner. They offer Nextcloud with 1 TB of storage for about 5,11 EUR per month and you don’t have to think about any changes like this and the data is also backed up as well:
