Hi Nextcloud Community,
I’m looking to register to for Nextcloud Community Conference 2026 and support the project, but I noticed that PayPal appears to be the primary payment option available. I was hoping to ask whether there are any alternative payment methods that could be used instead.
My main concerns are:
-
I don’t currently have a PayPal account, and I’d prefer not to create one.
-
I like to use temporary or virtual card numbers for online transactions where possible. These single-use or merchant-locked numbers are a great security practice — if the number is ever compromised, it can’t be used elsewhere and you avoid the hassle of disputing charges or replacing your main card. Unfortunately, this approach doesn’t work well with PayPal’s account-based system.
Given that Nextcloud is such a strong advocate for user privacy and security, it would feel very much in the spirit of the project to offer payment options that support this kind of security-conscious approach. Options like:
-
Direct card payment (which would allow the use of virtual/temporary card numbers)
-
Bank transfer / SEPA for those in Europe
-
Cryptocurrency for those who prefer it
Has anyone found a workaround, or is there an official channel to suggest this? I think it would resonate well with the Nextcloud community’s values!
Thanks in advance!
Hey @boomerdaddy welcome to the nextcloud community and we’re certainly looking forward to seeing you at the conference
yeah, bumped my head on that too…
don’t worry, you won’t need one and you don’t need to create one either… just follow the steps and it works.
while this is totally true and 100% agreeable, that consciousness is lacking!
Hey, thanks for the reply, @scubamuc !
So you were right, I could register without creating an account, though, the data is processed by PayPal.
Just not sure what the “delivery address” is for when a credit card is used. Is the shirt being delivered anywhere?
I’d expect to just pick it up at the conference.
Nevermind. I just registered with the fee waiver checked and just didn’t complete the part for credit card payment, even though, that showed up seeming like a mandatory thing. I subsequently received confirmation of registration.
Hopefully, I can just give a cash donation at the event instead.
that delivery address is the name and address of the “Ticket-recipient” and has nothing to do with the t-shirt, I would have preferred to stay anonymous too, but that doesn’t work obviously
collected Nextcloud t-shirt at the gate, never worn mind you!
I got a ticket without my address! I was prepared to give the address of whatever random location.
There should be guides on what information is actually necessary for whatever transaction.
so let’s say we agree with each other and could maybe even get a chance to talk to the organisers, but I doubt the organisers will change anything?
looking forward to meeting you → as I’m a boomer dad too and we probably have lots in common
