Well, I don’t know how you move your data directory to save files on an external device,
but maybe this brings you to a solution:

I use the second version and it works great with an usb storage.
If you want to list the directory try ls -l

the mounted device has to be listed in df -h.
blkid shows you the UUID which you have to enter in /etc/fstab
