Windows 11: Talk app does not show badge notifications for new messages on taskbar

Hi everyone,

I’m currently deploying the Nextcloud Talk desktop application (Windows version) across our organization, and I’ve run into a challenge regarding user notifications.

While message notifications do arrive correctly, the app does not show any badge (unread counter or indicator) on the taskbar icon when new messages are received. This is causing some of our users to miss incoming messages, especially in multi-monitor setups where toast notifications might appear on secondary screens or go unnoticed.

I’ve checked the Windows notification settings, and made sure Talk has proper permissions and priority, but this behavior seems to be a limitation of the application itself.

My questions:

  • Is there any existing workaround or hidden setting to enable badge-style taskbar notifications on Windows 11?

  • If not, is this a known limitation, and is support for taskbar badge notifications planned in a future release?

Any insights or updates from the devs or community would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Hi everyone,

I can see that quite a few people have viewed this post, so I’m curious — has anyone else experienced this issue or found a workaround?
Do you think this is a general problem with the Windows 11 version of the Nextcloud Talk app, or maybe something specific to certain setups?

Also, does anyone have any insight into whether the developers might be working on a fix for this?
Would really appreciate any thoughts or feedback.

Thanks!

I came across a related issue on GitHub that seems to address exactly what we’re discussing here:
Nextcloud Talk Desktop - Windows Taskbar Badge Notifications

It appears that the developers are aware of the issue, and it’s currently open, so hopefully, a fix is on the way.
In the meantime, has anyone found a workaround or alternative solution? Would love to hear your experiences and thoughts on this.

Thanks!
