What to do after Nexcloud AIO Update failed

Nextcloud version : 29.0.6
Operating system and version: Ubuntu 24.04

Hi there,
i updated my Nextcloud AIO from 9.0.1 with Nextcloud 29.0.2 to AIO Version: 9.3.0 and Nextcloud 29.0.4. After the Update was finished i got the log entry in the “Nextcloud” Container that the Container couldn’t start because the Update was failed. I deleted the update.failed file and started the containers again. The Containers work correctly at now, but i’m facing some problems. Like if i watch a picture in the Web Browser it’s zoomed in very much.

I want to repair or reset my actual Nexcloud AIO. I have a backup from before the Update but I would like to just re install the Nexcloud AIO without data loss. Is there an Opportunitie to do this? Without using the Backup?
If thats not possible, how to re install the Nextcloud AIO the best way? Do I have to re install the docker Container?

Greetings
Alex

Why not simply restore the backup?

Did you try to clear your browser cache?

Just restoring the backup wouldn’t fix any problems I think. The database and config of the nextcloud seems intact. I think the Containers might have a problem.

I cleared the browser cache. It didn’t help.

I’ve found the AIO update process breaks NextCloud. I don’t know if I’m supposed to run it every day, or never run it at all. Everything else about NextCloud is pretty good, but the AIO update is a major problem.

The Aio containers indeed need to be updated regularly. For that we send notifications to the users regularly. The breakage only happened due to a php update which can only happen if you do not update at least once for like 6 months or longer.

You can also still follow all-in-one/manual-upgrade.md at main · nextcloud/all-in-one · GitHub like suggested in the logs.

So after a few tries I was able to get next cloud to work, but if I restart the containers, everything breaks again. Then I’m stuck going through that process again only to break the next time the container is restarted through AIO. Am I stuck doing this repair daily until I take everything down and redo the install. If I have to do that is there a backup and restore that does this easier or do I just upload from the client all over again?

I fear without logs it is hard to help you.

I get the exact same result as I originally posted after recovering. If I restart the docker container with sudo docker restart nextcloud-aio-nextcloud Then the container restarts as normal and everything is normal, and nothing gets updated.

If I restart using AIO it breaks. Again. With the same error as before.

But since updating is not an option and I need this to be operational, I’ve blown it all away and will be starting from scratch again.

I believe the AIO update process is not as robust as you believe it to be.

Please proof that statement by providing the logs that show it.

Without the logs, the update process cannot be improved.

do ou just want the output from docker logs nextcloud-aio-nextcloud, or do you want more from inside the container?

2024-12-06T02:14:03.050685742Z This most likely happened because you tried to restore an old Nextcloud version from backup that is not compatible with the PHP version that comes with the container.
2024-12-06T02:14:03.050705424Z Please try to restore a more recent backup which contains a Nextcloud version that is compatible with the PHP version that comes with the container.
2024-12-06T02:14:03.050716795Z If you do not have a more recent backup, feel free to have a look at this documentation: all-in-one/manual-upgrade.md at main · nextcloud/all-in-one · GitHub

At this point your “fix” can get it working, but as soon as AIO restarts the container, or it restarts using the backup and update tool, it breaks again.

Hi, I am not sure if this is the bug you ran into but the update process when updating between multiple major versions indeed had a bug which will be fixed in the next version. See nextcloud entrypoint: fix missing apostroph in require command by szaimen · Pull Request #5718 · nextcloud/all-in-one · GitHub

I’m just going to assume that NextCloud updates are broken and I’ll make plans to reinstall in the new year. I did see that the next couple of major versions have been pulled from production, so I’m guessing running old software will be standard for now.

Hello SamanthaSass.
First of all, I would recommend you to open a separate ticket for your problem instead of using mine for your error, which differs from mine. I broke the Nextcloud AIO update myself by executing the commands incorrectly. Since then everything has been running smoothly.

Secondly, the output of your log

2024-12-06T02:14:03.050622188Z This version of Nextcloud is not compatible with PHP>=8.3.
You are currently running 8.3.13.It seems like your installed Nextcloud is not compatible with the by the container provided PHP version.

looks to me exactly like the problem szaimen describes here:

I would therefore advise you not to leave your Nextcloud instance always running on an old version, because then the update will go wrong all the more if you ever want to update. Not to mention the security risks.

Instead, I recommend that you reinstall the Nextcloud AIO once to the latest version. Restore your backup, if available, or re-upload your files from the client. Then, as szaimen wrote, you should update your instance more than every six months to avoid such an error.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, wasn’t supposed to happen, but seeing as you looked at my logs, feel free to look at the rest of what I posted, and realize that the update “fix” that you posted as being the final answer to this issue doesn’t actually fix the issue as it comes back the very next time you try to use AIO to restart/update the installation.

And if you actually looked at what I posted here, you would see that I specifically said that in my comment.

So yeah, the “fix” doesn’t actually fix the installation, and AIO appears to be broken, and Nextcloud has posted that at least 2 major versions have big enough issues that they have been pulled.

So for your issue, and apparently for mine as well, the only real answer appears to be copy your data elsewhere, and reinstall NextCloud since the upgrade process is unreliable and broken.
