This is less of a bug report, or support request and more of an inquiry.
I am in the later stages of setting up nextcloud and moving a variety of my files and folders into nextcloud to take advantage of sync, and specifically virtual files. Typical implementation, just want to keep some files completely cloud-based and others local, making all files available, helping to manage disk space on the client computer, its based on age, but I’m separating them into their own folder (since NC doesnt allow to auto-virtualize due to age)
Virtual files work, so far they’ve worked perfectly, and as-intended. However virtual files lose their thumbnails so identifcation is extremely difficult unless they are all properly named (they are not)…
From what i’ve been able to find/test:
- Virtual file thumbnails have been implemented
- It seems they may only work for photos (this is fine)
- Virtual file thumbnails work on my windows computer when setup there
I am on:
- Debian 12
- Dolphin 22.12.x
- using dolphin-nextcloud (v3.7.3) package for integration
My assumption is that its probably just not implemented, but I wanted to see anyways…
- Does anyone with a similar system have this working
- Does anyone on linux have this working?
- Is there a setting i’m missing?
- Or maybe a file-browser that is compatible with nc’s virtual files in such a way that supports these thumbnails?
- Any other method/workarounds??
I was exploring the option of using the newest versions of dolpin (v25) and dolphin-nextcloud (v3.16) on my deb 13 system, but it doesnt work there either..
Ive seen that rclone has a VFS option? Was considering trying that
The Basics
- Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
Nextcloud version 30.0.1 - Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
Debian 12 - Kernel 6.1.0-35 - Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
replace me
- Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
replace me
- PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
replace me
- Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
-yes - When did this problem seem to first start?
enabled virtual files, this never worked
Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):
Specific to my setup:
- Use the nextcloud client to sync folders
- Enable Experimental options
- enable virtual files for synced folders
- set some portion of files to online only “free up space”
- the files will lose their thumbnails
