Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • NC 30.0.2
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Ubuntu 24.04.1
  • Installation method (e.g. AIO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Snap

Summary of the issue you are facing:

One of my NextCloud folders contains my entire music collection, i.e. files for travelling.

My music server for home also runs on the server with NextCloud. My music collection exists a second time for this purpose.

The music server (LogitechMediaserver, now: LyrionMusikServer) cannot be used to access the music collection in NextCloud. Apparently you need root rights for this. Or is there a way to do this?

Nextcloud Hub 9 (30.0.2) via Snap on Ubuntu 24.04.1

Hi,

I encountered a similar situation on my Nextcloud AIO server. In addition to Nextcloud, I run multimedia servers like Plex Media Server, Jellyfin, and Navidrome. All of these servers are running as Docker containers and use persistent volumes, which allow them direct access to the files.

Your Case

Since you are using a Snap installation of Nextcloud, your data should be located in the following directory:

/var/snap/nextcloud/common/nextcloud/data/

Recommendation

  1. Use Multimedia Servers via Docker
If you use a multimedia server running in Docker, you can configure persistent volumes to map directly to the directory in Nextcloud where your files (e.g., your music collection) are stored.

  2. Direct Access to Files
Persistent volumes ensure that your multimedia server can directly read files from the Nextcloud data directory without needing to copy or duplicate them.

  3. No Permission Issues
This approach eliminates potential permission issues or the need for manual data handling.

Benefits of This Solution

  • Simplicity: No need to create duplicates of your files.
  • Efficiency: Data is accessed directly from the directory where Nextcloud stores it.
  • Flexibility: This solution works independently of the multimedia server you choose.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the quick reply. So I install LogitechmediaServer a second time on the Ubuntu server via Docker.

This second LogitechmediaServer can be configured to access the music files under Nextcloud without any permissions issues (" persistent volumes").

That sounds good. I’ll have to see if I can manage the installation and configuration. But the path is clear.

Thanks again

Henri

Includes a server backend compatible with the Subsonic and Ampache protocols, allowing playback and browsing of your library on various external apps e.g. on Android or iPhone

Maybe that already fulfills your needs.

Thanks for the tip.
At first I thought: ok, either LogitechMediaServer via Snap or a music server with Subsonic and Ampache protocol - these should be roughly the same solutions.
But if I install an additional music server, I already have three servers running: NextCloud, Logitechmediaserver for my music at home and a music server for travelling.
I think I’ll try the simpler solution first.
