Using multiple calendars - Unable to assign events to a calendar

When using the calendar app, I can create new calendars, but there is no option to assign an event to a specific calendar, seemingly making extra calendars useless.
Is there a solution for this?

There should be a drop down menu where you can choose / change the calendar to which the event will be assigned, right below the input field for the event title.

If you want to assign events to the calendars of other users, they first have to share their calendars with you and grant write access to them. Otherwise the calendars won’t appear in the drop down menu. There’s a “can edit” checkbox" in the “share” dialogue for granting write permissions.
