The issue you are facing:
upgrade via web interface fails with the error

Check for expected files

Steps to replicate it:

  1. upgrade using web UI

haven’t changed any permissions since upgrading to 17.0.0

also, the ‘security & setup warnings’ section shows no invalid files.

Just remove the extra files.

yeah, thanks. this morning was the first time i’ve actually been able to log in to the server directly. deleted the ‘error’ directory and the upgrade progressed as normal. suspect it was maybe created for web server logs but contained nothing.
i will be more pro-active regarding this in the future.
