Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 33
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian 11
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • none
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • nginx 1.31.3
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.4.19
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • upgrade a plugin via GUI
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Docker
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • no

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Tried to upgrade a plugin in GUI mode, the application immediately displayed that it entered maintenance mode and was stuck in this state. I tried to flip the maintenance indicator with command line and now the application displays “use the web update at your own risk”.

Tried to switch to the documented built-in updater, but there isn’t any /var/www/nextcloud/updater/updater.phar file! Not even an updater folder…

How can enter the manual upgrade mode then?

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

try sudo docker exec --user www-data YOUR_CONTAINER_NAME php occ upgrade
maybe you have to try php8.4 instead of only php

Thanks the quick answer! I’m currently running v33 and the latest version is v35. Can occ upgrade possibly break the whole thing?

As long as you haven’t downloaded a new server version, this command only updates apps and adds missing database indexes.

Check your Nextcloud log before simply turning off maintenance. This occurred for a reason. (You’ll need to provide more details, such as which app you were attempting to update to get any specific guidance from us here on the forum).

See Admin Manual for specifics on app management, etc.

The Updater is for the Nextcloud Server instance itself, not for individual apps. Also note the Updater isn’t applicable to you since you’re using the community Docker image: GitHub - nextcloud/docker: A community maintained docker micro-image for deploying Nextcloud on container platforms · GitHub

Were you perhaps looking for the app updater? See the Admin Manual chapter on app management as well as the command reference for the occ app:* command set.

Seems the command “upgrade” did the trick! Thanks to all!

occ upgrade is not the right method to upgrade a Docker installation!

please review Docker upgrade procedure

never wrote, that this command is for upgrading a docker installation! You have to read first and then comment
the topic creator wanted to update a plugin, but was stuck in maintenance mode after that. my posted command completes an app or plugin update as you can see in the admin manuals

… you can safely execute occ upgrade manually or simply visit the URL of your instance to complete the database migrations and app upgrade phase.

Sorry, but the occ upgrade command is intended to complete the update after you’ve run either the command-line updater (updater.phar) or Nextcloud’s web-based updater to update Nextcloud to a new version. It’s not meant for regular updates of plugins or apps.

For the latter, you would use occ app:update <appname> or occ app:update --all to update all apps. The “app upgrade phase” in your quote refers to app updates that are carried out as part of a Nextcloud version update, not to regular app updates within the same Nextcloud version.

Also, you usually only need to run the occ upgrade command manually if you selected “No” when updater.phar asked whether you wanted to run it, or if you didn’t click the corresponding button in the Web Updater and/or it failed to run for some reason.

If you had quoted the entire paragraph from the documentation, it actually says that there, too:

If you accidentally say no when the command-line mode of the updater asks if you’d like to run occ upgrade, you can safely execute occ upgrade manually or simply visit the URL of your instance to complete the database migrations and app upgrade phase.

Thanks for the additional information!

To add some context, I tried initially to run the command line updater, but couldn’t find any update/updater.phar file: how can I add this function to the existing instance?

Thanks for any help!

I don’t use a Docker installation myself. But as @wwe already mentioned, Nextcloud updates with Docker don’t work through the built-in updater. Updating the Nextcloud container is done by pulling the new image, throwing away the old container, and starting a new one. So from my point of view, it makes sense that the updater isn’t exposed there. See also here: GitHub - nextcloud/docker: A community maintained docker micro-image for deploying Nextcloud on container platforms · GitHub

But yeah, unfortunately I can’t really help if there are problems after an update, since, as I said, I don’t use the Docker images myself.

Thanks a lot, this is probably the good reason for the lack of updater.phar…

Thanks to all!
