Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • replace me
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):

  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • replace me
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)

  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • replace me
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • No
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • When I started using it
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • NA
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • Yes - Cloudflare via NextDNS and Tailscale

Summary of the issue you are facing:

[…]

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Browse to a folder and download a large 5GB file.
  2. Speed crawls at less than 50Kb/s

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

PASTE HERE

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

PASTE

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

@bjgagliardi1 welcome to the community :waving_hand:

free tier? sometimes limit bandwidth.

  • if yes, double check your Cf + Ts + ND… bandwidth limits

I tried it on another computer that doesn’t have any of those services in use, and I get the same result.

you’ve not completed the template above… Support template. Please use this when you request support

  • where is the server hosted?
  • what OS is the server being hosted on?
  • etc…
  • is that computer in the same network?
  • is that the same network the server is on?

without clear detailed specs no one will be able to help you. try to add some information.

The server is a Hetzner Storagebox that is hosted in Germany. The computer is in the United States. But there are other computers in the United States that have no issue with download speeds.

I answered all of the pertinent questions from the template, which doesn’t include any of these questions. Thank you.

here come some more…

  • your windows computer is the only computer that has download issues?
  • are the other computers also in your network using Cf + Ts + ND?

There are other windows computers having the issue. They are using the Cf + Ts + ND services.

please be clear:

  • some windows computers not using Cf + Ts + ND have no issues
  • some windows computers using Cf + Ts + ND have issues

so this is a Cf + Ts + ND issue and has nothing to do with the Nextcloud instance hosted on Hetzner right?

There is no consistency there. Some windows computers that do not use cf+ts+nd, DO have issues. Some windows computers that do use cf+ts+nd, DO NOT have the issue. The one user that has reported the issue has the slow speeds whether he tried it on a computer with AND without cf+ts+nd. I asked him to run a trace route and this was his result:

I’ve run into a very similar situation and wanted to join in here. In my case, large file downloads (around 4–5GB) also slow down to under 100Kb/s, even though smaller files transfer at normal speeds.

A couple of things I’ve noticed when troubleshooting so far:

  • The slowdown seems worse when using Cloudflare or similar proxy setups.

  • Direct access sometimes improves speed slightly, but doesn’t fully resolve it.

  • Logs don’t show obvious errors, but network requests in the browser inspector show long “pending” times.

What makes this more frustrating is that I’ve seen how fast and smooth other platforms can be, for example, browsing this website loads really quickly, which highlights just how slow these Nextcloud transfers feel in comparison.

Has anyone found reliable adjustments (either on the server or reverse proxy side) that help with large file downloads?
