Service unavailable after DNS problem

My NextcloudPi somehow got stuck and I get ā€˜service unavailableā€™ after I log in. The client doesnā€™t sync any more either. I suppose, it started when my dynamic DNS provides was off. I fixed this issue now, but I canā€™t get ncp back on.

The first thing I noticed when logging into the admin panel was that HPB service was down. I strongly suppose this had to do with the domain not being accessible. When I fixed DNS and the domain worked again, HPB worked again.

ncp, nc and apps are configured to automatically upgrade. Of course, I rebooted ncp. Still, I get the error message. What other information do you need to figure out what the problem is? Iā€™d appreciate any help greatly.

Hey ,first of all please remove your public IP from your post. It is not necessary.
Better is to post the ncp-report here so someone can see if there is an issue with your instance or something misconfigured.

The crash happens with all users after login or just with specific?
Did you install any apps in the last time?
Do you use a docker, curl or image installation?

I canā€™t log into the web interface with different accounts. So far, I havenā€™t figured out one I still can log in. However, I noticed that some syncs and ways to access my data work again. Notes, calendar items and contacts are synced on my Android phone. I can also access the files via the Android Nextcloud App. The desktop computer sync client doesnā€™t work.

The last app I installed is ā€˜Passwordsā€™ a couple of days ago. But Nextcloud didnā€™t break as soon as I installed it. It kept working totally fine.

I use an image installation.

There still seems to be an issue with the HPB service. When I checked the system info today, Nextcloud was in maintenance mode and HPB service was down again. I managed to get it back up using ā€˜systemctl restart notify_pushā€™. Then, I could turn off maintenance mode again. But still, I canā€™t log into the Nextcloud web interface and everything else is as described above.

Is there any other log file or information I could provide in order for you to help me figure out the solution? I rely pretty strongly on Nextcloud as a hub for many things and it is quite difficult to work around the issue all day long. I would be relieved if this could be fixed and Iā€™d appreciate any effort youā€™d make to help.

I tried different things and I think what finally worked was upgrading my system using ā€˜sudo apt-get upgradeā€™. I can access the web interface again.

Still, my Nextcloud behaves strangely. See: Only ncp users' calendars are accessible But this may be completely unrelated.

Hi,
after some reboots of the host raspberry pi 4 (8GB) with nextcloudpi installed, the internet router and even the netgear switch, I found a network cable was not plugged in (wifi is not reliable enough). Then I got this problem that nextcloud did not work. The nextcloudpi configuration panel said that a so called HPB Service is down (I do not know yet what this is). And nextcloud website said it is unavailable. Then I searched for this problem and DDG found this site. As indicated I updated manually the linux distribution as I had access with SSH again. But I used #apt dist-upgrade (yes, I forgot #apt update).

After the updates I rebooted (here #reboot is enough, on a internet server it was recommended to reboot with #shutdown -r now - why required? O do not know ā€¦). Then web interface did work again. After some tests (caldav & carddav access with a different user works again - also access to calendar and address book work for a user - I do not use ncp ā€¦ several users use this nextcloud ā€¦ it is almost always better to us a non-administrative user for daily works, if no administrative things have to be done ā€¦). Thankfully all works again (what I use: nextcloudpi 1.51.2, nextcloud 25.0.5), although this site recommended: ncp-updater recommends that what is said in title.

Although this post is old, I want to confirm for others having this problem with the (ā€˜nowā€™) current nextcloudpi read this, so that it hopefully solves their problem, too.

Do you use a SD-card for nextcloudpi (as recommended from them)?

My first nextcloud I used and installed (nextcloudpi did not exist yet if I remember correctly) was on a raspberry pi 2. There I used a SD-card (I took care to choose a perhaps little but speedy SD-card ā€¦ seemed to be a reason why it was not extremely slow as some other tried it, too). A external hard disc was not possible. Then after a year or so I had strange problems. I could copy a older backup of the image to the same SD-card, then updated it again and then surprisingly it worked again. This happened several times again. At one time this did not help and almost nothing worked. And I had more and more strange bugs. When there were so many bugs, I assumed this can not be all bugs from nextcloud or other software. Then I searched in the net to find out how to find out if sd-card has strange errors itself. Sadly I did not find a simple test but I could measure how many IO-errors the filesystem has. And it had many (the maximum), why I could not write anything on SD-card. Somehow I found how to reduce these strange IO errors (I do not want to bore with too much details) and it worked again. This happened again several times. Now on a raspberry pi 4 I can use an external hard disc. I use an old but good samsung ssd and for now after about 1.5 years I do not have strange errors.

So perhaps the software system on your raspberry pi has this errors because of IO errors on SD-card and not the system nextcloud itself. Yes, sadly this comment does not halp to solve the problem, but hopefully it helps to find the real reason. So for next nextcloudpi I recommend to configure the raspberry pi in that manner, that it boots from an external USB disc. Then install nextcloudpi on this external disc (yes, burned image on disc is much smaller, but thankfully on next boot it automatically expands the partition to the whole disc). My reliable ssd did have only 256B. Some weeks ago I read raspberry pi can address only maximal 256GB. So I was in luck (earlier I thought a 1TB hard disc would be better but I did not know this limit). So, it is almost 4am ā€¦ so I have to go to sleep. I wish good luck with the next nextcloudpi.
