Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 31.0.10
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • FreeBSD 13.5
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Apache 2.4.65
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • nginx 1.28.0
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.1.33
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • No
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • Always been there
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Installation via admin gui
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

When configuring the mail-app, there is no way to use a SMTP server without adding a username/password. My SMTP server (sendmail) does not require auth and the configuration is not possible without them. No SSL/TLS is used (local mailserver)

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Start mail-app from the top menu

  2. Configure IMAP (with user/password)

  3. Configure SMTP (without user/password)

  4. The gui does not accept empty user/password textboxes.

Thanks for reporting this :+1:

I’m afraid we just don’t support that mode.

However, did you try using some “fake” credentials? Because usually the server requests the client to authenticate, if your server didn’t ask for that, then probably just continue without providing them.

Unfortunately, your suggestion does not work. It would be great if this problem could be fixed as soon as possible. For a private nextcloud server, SMTP auth is not needed.

You should do a feature request at Github:
https://github.com/nextcloud/mail/issues

You can pipe to sendmail. Won’t that work for you?

I think OP is talking about the Mail app, at least that’s how I understand it.

However, the only situation I can think of where using an SMTP server without authentication in this context makes sense is if it is running on the same server as Nextcloud, and if Nextcloud Mail is the only email client used to send emails through that SMTP server. As soon as other email clients can access the SMTP server remotely, even it is only within the local network, authentication should be used. Therefore, I can somewhat understand why this rather exotic use case is not supported in Nextcloud Mail.

Hi!

Even if you find this use-case “exotic”, this is the way I am running the server. If it is not to much trouble, why not implement it? Roudcube accepts a local SMTP server without auth and security is my responsibity, isn’t it?

So please implement this use-case for the mail-app.

Best Regards Stefan Sundberg

Oh, you’re right. I overlooked that.

There is already a feature request on GitHub:

You can give this feature request on GitHub a thumbs up so that developers can see how much interest there is (as a reaction, not as a comment).
