Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 28.0.14.1
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian 12 Bookworm
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Apache/2.4.62 (Debian)
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • replace me
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • PHP 8.1.31
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • NCP
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I am using NCP v1.55.4. The system is so great at automating everything with years of problem-free operation, that I only recently realized it got stuck on Nextcloud 28.0.14.1. The server still functions somehow, but attempts to upgrade fail; attempts to use nc-backup fail. I think my SD card is dying.

I have a recent backup and my plan is to restore with a new SD card. My question is this: Do I need to use the NextcloudPi_RaspberryPi4_v1.54.3 image (which runs Nextcloud 28), restore and then upgrade NC, or can I use the v1.55.3 image (which comes with NC 30), and then restore to the previous version?

Apologies if this is the wrong place or has been answered elsewhere. The info I found was outdated (Restoring back - returns to old version of Nextcloud?). Thanks for any guidance.

I never did it myself, but I would prefer your plan as first attempt, considering to choose an usb device as boot device and leaving out the sd-card at all.

Thank you for your reply, but I’m not sure I understand. To restore an NC 28 instance, would you recommend starting from NC 28, or does it work to start with NC 30 and restore to the previous version?

Also, is there a reason you recommend doing this with a USB stick and not an SD card? I’m running NextcloudPi on a RaspberryPi 4, so I’m most familiar with booting from the SD card.

As you suggested yourself, I vote to start with that alternatiive

Start with good backups, this should not be a one shot mission but you should be able to start again and again.

Use whatever you are fine with, I prefer a ssd as boot divice for working server and take sd cards for testing.

I understand, thanks again for the help! Option 1 did work, however, I discovered the root issue. The SD card was not dying, rather, I was getting I/O errors when I tried to update or restore. This turned out to be this issue: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=245931

I simply moved my two external hard drives to the USB 2 ports, and everything works again on the original NC 28 instance.

Nice, thanks for the hint, keep on piing.
