Rename the file (JPG, PDF, etc.) with the viewer open, in place, or in the viewer menu or in the detailed sidebar menu (in the drop-down menu, where only “Tags” activation is shown).
If updating the filename in the viewer is difficult, defer, it doesn’t matter.

However, you are right. In order to rename a file you have to click on “Rename” in the three dots menu of the respective file in the files list, which is obviously not accessible when the image viewer or the PDF viewer is open. And yes, you cannot rename a file directly from the three dots menu in the side bar, you have to use the one in the files list.
