I have been searching for hours but just can’t quite find the answer to this question. Is there a way to get a doc or docx file to open in MSWord instead of just downloading it? Sorry if this is answered somewhere else, having a hard time getting the search to produce the results I want.

You need to “teach” your browser doing that…
oh… and it would be downloaded anyways… before opening.
As @JimmyKater explained the magic is done by your web broser. Here you can see how the dialog looks like in Firefox:
