Nextcloud vs CardDav Clients: What's a Group

I’m experiencing a discrepancy between how Nextcloud Contacts groups and groups on my cardDav clients (macOS & iOS Contacts).

  • Nextcloud groups don’t sync at all.
  • macOS/iOS groups sync to Nextcloud as individual contacts, not as groups.

It appears to be impossible to organize contacts in a way that syncs across both Nextcloud and CardDav clients, but that can’t be right, right?

Tell me what I’m doing wrong?

Nextcloud only supports groups within a vcard, if the CATEGORIES: field is used. iOS stores that information in a separate vcard, which is not compatible with the current implementation. You find more details in this issue:
