Nextcloud & Synology as External Storage

Hi everyone,

I’m working on integrating Nextcloud with Synology NAS as external storage, but I’ve run into file locking issues when users access shared folders.

My Setup:

  • Nextcloud: On-prem installation
  • External Storage: Synology NAS, connected via SMB
  • Issue: File locking problems when multiple users open/edit files

I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully set up Nextcloud with Synology.

  • Have you encountered locking issues?
  • What workarounds or best practices did you use?
  • Is this a stable solution for production use?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by “locking issues” more specifically?

When a user edit a file and save it the other users get this message and cannot open the file:

Also, when two users edit a file at the same time, the file will be in read-only mode for a while. Users have the NC desktop app for syncing and work with the folders locally (not on the web).
