Wow, thank you very much, this led me quickly to the solution. Kuddos!

This is an install that ran for over two months with no problems at all. It is installed on a 2Tb dedicated server in France. I use Virtualmin on Debian 9 to maintain the server, never had any problems with that combination.
This week I tried to change the php version from fcgi to fpm, and that is where the troubles began. It (Nextcloud) would not run on my machine in fpm mode, so I switched back and then nothing worked anymore.

I did have error_reporting set to the max, I changed the Nextcloud logging to max: ‘loglevel’ => 0, but no decent messages were shown.

The error-messages (from both nginx, php and Nextcloud) were less then helpfull, so in desperation I turned to the forum and I am happy to say that @j-ed pointed me in the right direction.

I had to change the php.ini file:

;open_basedir =
to
open_basedir = /home/xxx
and
sys_temp_dir = “/tmp”
to
sys_temp_dir = “/home/xxx/tmp”

And then everything started working again.

So once again thanks to @j-ed and good to know that this forum really does help people.
