New installation - Formatting new data disk and changing data location

Hi, everyone,

(Linux noob here) I have a fresh installation of Nextcloud snap on Ubuntu server and I need to change the data location to an eSATA disk which is currently unformatted.

My previous machine ran NextcloudPi, and the data disk was formatted with BTRFS, but I’m not sure what filesystem would be recommended for this setup. NextcloudPi had an option in the web GUI to format a disk, but I don’t see any such option in the Nextcloud GUI.

Should I format the data disk using a partition management tool such at PartEd Magic, and then change the data disk to the new drive? If so, what would be the best filesystem to use? Or, is there a way to format the new disk from within Ubuntu server?

I’m not so far along in my setup that I couldn’t simply start over and reinstall everything - are there options in the snap installation and configuration to choose a different location for the data drive? I don’t recall seeing any.

Thank you.

Hey @Skyhooker,

Go with whatever you’re comfortable with… as long as it can handle Linux permissions. So BTRFS is fine, but stick to the Ubuntu recommendation.

This should get you started on changing data directory How to manage external media and storage for Nextcloud snap but that comes with some caveats requiring careful configuration considering How to backup, restore and migrate Nextcloud snap.

Make sure you have Requirements covered and read Configuration, see FAQ’s if you get stuck.

Feel free to check out Nextcloud snap wiki and support and don’t hesitate to ask if something is unclear.
