I’ve just released **NetBase 0.4.0** (free & open-source, AGPL). Here is the one thing it does that I haven’t found anywhere else:

### 👉 Open the admin page of any device on your network — from anywhere — through Nextcloud.

A router, a switch, a printer, a NAS: NetBase fetches that device’s _own_ web interface and rewrites every address inside it, so you can **sign in and configure it from any place your Nextcloud is reachable** — **no VPN, no jump host, no site visit.** Push firmware, restore a config, take a backup. Several of these **device windows** can be open at once.

**New in 0.4.0 (up from 0.3.3) — this release is mostly about getting _in_ to devices:**

- A **real terminal** for SSH — `top`, `vi`, `less`, colours and cursor movement all work, resizable by dragging — with a proper sign-in dialog (password, or a private key picked from your Nextcloud Files).
- **Telnet you can actually use** , not just diagnose — sign in and run commands on switches and older gear.
- **Right-click a device for the ways in** — HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, Telnet — built only from the ports it actually has open; nothing speculative.
- SSH, Telnet and each web page open in their **own movable, resizable window** , so several stand open beside the device list at once.
- A **per-device port scan** (all 65,535, gentle on old hardware) that finds which open ports serve a web page and turns them into links.
- **Devices on another subnet of the same wire are found and stay found** — NetBase listens continuously for their multicast announcements, so they appear without a scan and aren’t wrongly marked offline.

Built around that, NetBase is a full network toolbox — everything on the same screen, behind the Nextcloud login you already have.

**Discovery with no root, no agent, no extra packages.** NetBase primes the kernel neighbour table and reads it back, asks each device its own name over NetBIOS / mDNS / WS-Discovery / SSDP, and quietly listens in the background for the announcements devices broadcast. MAC addresses are matched against a bundled IEEE registry of 53,000+ vendor prefixes, fully offline.

**And the everyday lookups, all on the same page:**

- **LAN sweep & inventory** — name, IPv4, MAC, vendor, type, open ports; CSV export
- **DNS** — any record type from any resolver, resolver comparison, delegation trace, zone-transfer test
- **Whois** — domains and IPs, following IANA referrals, no `whois` binary needed
- **TLS / HTTP** — certificate chain & expiry, accepted TLS versions, redirect chain, security headers
- **Mail** — SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS, DANE, blocklists; SMTP/IMAP/POP3 tests; open-relay test; a real test message
- **FTP / SFTP** — browse a remote server and move files to and from your Nextcloud folders
- **SSH / Telnet** — a credential-free probe, plus commands or a full terminal on saved connections
- **Wake-on-LAN** , and **benchmarks** (internet speed, iperf3 LAN throughput, HTTP timing)

Every result can be copied, downloaded, or saved straight into your Nextcloud files.

**Access is per-tool.** NetBase is an administrator’s app, and anything that touches the local network is admin-only by default — but each tool can be opened to named groups or to everyone, so you can lend out whois and DNS without lending out the network. Accounts allowed nothing don’t even see it in their app menu.

Available in **20 languages** , and NetBase can run in a different language from the rest of Nextcloud, per account.

- **App Store:** [NetBase - Apps - App Store - Nextcloud](https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/netbase)
- **Source (AGPL):** [GitHub - ktec-nc-apps/NetBase · GitHub](https://github.com/ktec-nc-apps/NetBase)

Feedback of any kind is genuinely welcome — even just _how you’d use it_.

_If NetBase is useful to you, I maintain two more small “…Base” apps:_

- **RegiBase** — a personal database you design yourself, for everything worth keeping: cards, bank accounts, logins, licences, memberships, contacts. Make your own fields (or start from a template) and read your records as a list, a spreadsheet-style table, or cards. Secret fields are encrypted in your browser with AES-GCM — the server never sees the key or the plaintext — and it works with the rest of Nextcloud: import your Contacts, push a collection to Tables, attach Files, drop dates onto your Calendar, open addresses on a map. Full AES-256 backup and `occ` command-line access included. 20 languages. → [RegiBase - Apps - App Store - Nextcloud](https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/regibase)
- **FormulaBase** — for the calculations you redo again and again: markups, unit conversions, loan payments, mixing ratios. Define a formula’s variables once, then just open it and type in the numbers — the answer updates live, entirely in your browser. It ships with nearly **3,000 ready-made formulas across 63 fields** (physics, finance, geometry, chemistry, health and more), searchable and droppable straight into your own collections, and every formula keeps a numbered version history you can restore. → [FormulaBase - Apps - App Store - Nextcloud](https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/formulabase)

- **SSH / Telnet** —

Interesting 🙂 Will it work with Nextcloud-AIO, running in Docker containers?

Good question — thank you! Let me actually test this on a virtualised setup rather than answer from theory, and I’ll report back here with what I find.

(Note: I’m a Japanese speaker using translation — if anything is unclear, tell me and I’ll rephrase.)

**Short answer: yes — you can get the full device list under Docker/AIO, the same as on a native install.** The key is running NetBase with **host networking**.

**How I checked** (my own Nextcloud is a native/bare-metal install, so I built containers to test this):

- **Docker:** I ran the actual NetBase app in two containers. In a normal bridged container (how AIO runs Nextcloud) it saw only the container’s own Docker network — none of the LAN. With `--network host`, the _same_ NetBase saw the host machine’s real network. So the fix is demonstrated with NetBase itself.
- **Podman + native** (on my real LAN): a bridged container likewise saw only its gateway; a host-networked container inherited the host’s full LAN, and NetBase running natively listed the whole LAN (router, printer, IoT…) with vendor names.

**Why:** layer-2 discovery (ARP/mDNS/NetBIOS/SSDP) doesn’t cross Docker’s bridge — the same reason Home Assistant needs host networking. Host networking removes that wall because the container shares the host’s network view. (The one condition is that the host machine itself is on your LAN.)

**How to do it on AIO:** AIO keeps its own Nextcloud container on an internal network and won’t let you move it, so run a small separate NetBase as a “network console” with host networking, on a machine on your LAN:

```auto
docker run -d --name netbase-console --network host \
  -e SQLITE_DATABASE=nc -e NEXTCLOUD_ADMIN_USER=admin \
  -e NEXTCLOUD_ADMIN_PASSWORD=choose-a-password \
  -e NEXTCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINS=<host-ip> nextcloud
docker exec -u www-data netbase-console php occ app:install netbase
```

Open `http://<host-ip>/` and the device list will show your LAN. (`--network host` takes port 80 on that machine, so run it where 80 is free — e.g. a spare box/Pi. macvlan can also work but it depends on your switch accepting an extra MAC — it didn’t on my hardware, so host networking is the reliable route.)

Meanwhile your existing AIO already does everything address-based right now — opening a device’s admin page through Nextcloud by IP, plus DNS, whois, TLS/HTTP, per-host port scan, mail, SSH/SFTP/FTP/Telnet and the speed test.

Thanks — a great question; it pushed me to test this properly across Podman and Docker.

You have done an excellent job building this application.

I have installed it on my Docker architecture, and I have an issue.

See the image below.

 ![NetBase-2026-09-08 214138](https://help.nextcloud.com/uploads/default/original/3X/1/3/13d63a891725cd8331004b81f514fa473933c720.png)

As you can see I have missing extensions on the docker container which was pulled from the Docker Hub, and it will be quite a task having to add the extensions every time the Nextcloud docker image is updated.

I am wondering if there is a chance in adding the extensions to the NextBase App.

Keep up the good work…

Thanks very much — I’m really glad it’s useful, and thanks for the report.

The honest answer to your direct question first: a Nextcloud **app can’t ship PHP extensions**. They’re compiled modules loaded by the PHP runtime itself, not files that live inside an app, so NetBase has no way to bundle them — that’s a limitation of how PHP/Nextcloud work, not something I can add. Sorry to disappoint on that point.

Two things should still help:

**1) NetBase is built to run without them.** Each missing extension only removes the one feature that needs it — e.g. without `sockets` you lose multicast discovery (WS-Discovery/SSDP) and Wake-on-LAN, but devices are still found and named over NetBIOS, mDNS and reverse DNS. NetBase’s **Requirements** screen lists exactly what each missing piece would add, so nothing else is affected.

**2) You can add them once and have them survive image updates, without rebuilding.** The official `nextcloud` image runs any script you drop into `/docker-entrypoint-hooks.d/before-starting/` on every start, and it already includes `docker-php-ext-install`. So add a small script there:

```sh
#!/bin/sh
# /docker-entrypoint-hooks.d/before-starting/netbase-ext.sh
docker-php-ext-install sockets >/dev/null 2>&1 || true
```

I tested this on the current `nextcloud` image — `sockets` was the one missing (`curl`, `ftp` and `posix` are already in). If your Requirements screen also lists `snmp`, that one needs its system library first: `apt-get update && apt-get install -y libsnmp-dev` before `docker-php-ext-install snmp`.

Because the hook runs on every start, you set it up once and image updates keep working — no re-adding by hand. (If you’d rather not recompile on each start, the same `docker-php-ext-install …` line in a small `FROM nextcloud` image works too; you’d just rebuild it when you update.)

I’ll also look at making NetBase’s Requirements screen show this Docker recipe when it detects it’s in a container, so it’s easier to find. Thanks again for the kind words and the useful nudge.

Just an observation.

Every time I scan my Docker network on a “172.18.0.0/16” network I get the following.

| Warning | PHP | Undefined variable $wait at /var/www/html/custom\_apps/netbase/lib/Service/ScanService.php#499 |
| --- | --- | --- |

It does not seem to affect the results, and the warning is just in the logs.

Take care…

</div>

Thank you very much for taking the time to report this, and for the precise pointer to the line.

You diagnosed it exactly right — and your instinct that it wasn’t affecting the results was correct too. In `stepPorts()` the code read `$wait` one line before it was actually assigned, so PHP logged that “Undefined variable” warning on every port-scan step. (It also made the port-scan budget miscalculate slightly, so it was worth fixing properly rather than just silencing the log.)

The good news: this is already fixed. The bug-fix release I mentioned above — NetBase 0.5.0 — went out today and is on the App Store now. `$wait` is set before it’s used again (with a small regression test to keep it that way), so updating to 0.5.0 will make that warning disappear.

0.5.0 also carries a batch of other fixes and a couple of additions you might find handy on a Docker/AIO setup — a “working” indicator on every tool among them.

Thanks again for the careful reports; they genuinely help. Please keep them coming if you spot anything else.

Just to confirm that the previous reported observation is no longer occurring. 👍

A couple of things:

In the Drop Down options as shown below, could we have a Type of “Container”, or better still the option to enter any text.

 ![NetBase-Option](https://help.nextcloud.com/uploads/default/original/3X/e/8/e8b295744175be0b64c3fdda69c52d2e816a9df4.png)

Also in the System Information “/docker-entrypoint-hooks.d/before-starting/” - this will only work if the Container/ Server has external access.

Unfortunately my system is “On-Prem” with no external access.

I will have another think on how to achieve the extension issue.

Again an Excellent Project.

Take Care…

Doh,

There is no need to think it over, as I have just realised that I normally download images that require an update on my laptop.

Hence, I can start the Nextcloud container on my laptop, and I can use your suggested option of having the “/docker-entrypoint-hooks.d/before-starting/” updating the php extensions.

I can then migrate the updated Nextcloud container to my architecture.

Have a good weekend…

Just to confirm, see below:

It was easier to just run the commands manually.

wow, thanks for a great project and a great idea… it even works out of the box on a snap instance, well done 👍

while your networking tools are great for monitoring and troubleshooting, it would certainly be great to have secure “local” shell access other than SSH connectivity you’re offering in the app. this would be something a self-hoster like myself would appreciate and enable troubleshooting and monitoring using “local” shell tools and bash scripts.

currently I’ve come up with a solution making the “local” shell available in my Nextcloud instance using TTYD web-shell behind a reverse proxy with basic `.htaccess` authentication and shell login requests, see: [TTYD web-shell in your Nextcloud](https://github.com/scubamuc/wiki-md/blob/scubamuc-wiki/SYSTEM.ttyd-shell-in-a-browser.md) → but I’m no developer and wouldn’t be able to build an app for Nextcloud… the solution is sane with good security, but it would be fantastic if you could add something like this to NetBase?

Hi @scubamuc,

Thank you for the kind words about the app, and thank you for the fantastic idea! Replies like yours are a huge encouragement for my development work.

I am incredibly happy to hear your report that it works out of the box on a snap instance. I’m sure this will be very helpful information for many other users. Since I am a solo developer, there is a limit to how many environments I can test on my own, so reports like this are an absolute treasure to me.

Your idea was a complete blind spot for me—it’s brilliant. However, launching a shell directly might conflict with the Nextcloud core team’s security policies. Therefore, I plan to implement it with the following two strict conditions:

1. It will only be accessible to administrators.

2. Email verification will be strictly required to use it.

Once these two conditions are met, I would like to make it possible to run the shell with Nextcloud’s execution privileges. I want to avoid a situation where `occ` commands can be executed in the shell without any authentication, unlike SSH.

I will release this in a new version along with the feature requested by @Cuello, so please give me a little bit of time to work on it.

Thank you again for the report and the great idea. I look forward to your continued support!

_(Also, please note that I am using AI to translate my messages, so apologies if any of the phrasing sounds a bit unnatural!)_

Hi @Cuello, @scubamuc — an update, and an apology for the wait.

**NetBase 0.6.0 goes out in the next two or three days.** I said on 9 September that a batch of bug fixes was coming “very soon”; what I actually built turned out to be much larger than that, which is why it has taken until now. Both of the things I promised you are in it.

### The two things you each asked for

**@Cuello — “Container” as a device type.** It is in the list. There is also **“Other (enter your own)”**, so you can type any type you like. A scan never guesses “Container” — it stays whatever you set by hand.

**@scubamuc — a local shell, under the two conditions I described.** Administrators only, and a **six-digit code is emailed to your account’s address** and must be entered before the shell opens. On a server with no route to the internet the code step is skipped, since no mail could leave it anyway. The terminal can also keep a record of what was done in it — the line you typed paired with the answer that came back, 5,000 steps by default.

### ⚠ Read this before you update

**Saved connections move into RegiBase, and the ones stored before this release are gone.** Nothing is migrated, deliberately: the old store was sealed with a secret kept on the same server as the data, and carrying that across would have meant carrying the weakness across too. **Write down what you need first** — host, user name and settings can be typed again, but a password or a private key kept only inside NetBase cannot be recovered afterwards.

In exchange, a password in RegiBase is sealed with a master key that NetBase never stores. The key is asked for at the moment a saved connection is used — never on a settings screen — held for that browser session alone, and forgotten when the session ends. RegiBase is therefore required in order to _save_ a connection; typing one in for one-off use needs nothing.

### File transfer, rebuilt

- **SCP added** , alongside SFTP and FTP. A server can offer SSH without the SFTP subsystem, and on that machine SCP is the only way to move a file. SCP itself copies one named file and nothing else, so listing, rename and mkdir are supplied over the shell the connection already provides, with every argument quoted.
- **A two-pane manager** : your Nextcloud files on one side, the server on the other. Drag and drop, multi-select, a transfer queue with progress, rate, time remaining and Stop.
- **Upload a whole folder** , subfolders and all. **Download a whole folder as one ZIP** — built on your own server, so nothing has to be installed on the machine you are visiting.
- Rename, **change permissions** , set the timestamp, and change owner/group when acting as root.
- A **text viewer and editor** in a window, with Shift\_JIS and EUC-JP read and written back as they were found.
- A **saved SSH connection can now be browsed for files** — it is the same machine, account and key; only the subsystem differs.
- **A folder only root can read can be opened over SCP.** Ticking _Act as root_ asks for the sudo password for that request and keeps it nowhere. It does not cover the file copy itself: SCP carries the file over the very input the password would go into, so those stay unelevated rather than appearing to work and quietly returning nothing.

### Safety

- **Acting as root now lapses on its own** after a set idle time — ten minutes by default, one to thirty in the settings, or never. A page left open on an unlocked screen was somebody else’s root.
- Working in NetBase resets the clock; merely having the tab in front of you does not, because a tab left open while its owner is elsewhere is the case this is for.

### Measurement

- **The speed test now lets you choose what to measure against: _Nearest (automatic)_, _M-Lab_, or _Cloudflare_.** It used to measure against M-Lab and fall back to Cloudflare only when M-Lab could not be reached at all, with no way to ask for the other one. A network that reaches one may not reach the other — M-Lab needs an outbound WebSocket — and two independent readings of the same line are worth more than one. Naming one now means it: asking for M-Lab where no M-Lab server answers says so, instead of handing back Cloudflare’s figure under M-Lab’s name.
- **It also asks which M-Lab server is actually nearest** rather than trusting the order it is given. It had put Seoul ahead of Tokyo for me — a measurement to the wrong country reads as a slow line rather than a distant one. On this server the reading moved from 187 Mbps to 427.
- **Fixed: the speed test reported someone else’s latency.** Throughput came from one network and the latency beside it was timed against another. Both now come from the same machine.
- A run lasts at least two seconds, and the size setting is a ceiling on the traffic it may use.

### Interface and language

- **Errors now appear in the language you read** , not only in English.
- The settings dialog is **four groups instead of eleven headings** , tabbed, and the closed tabs are legible against their background — measured rather than guessed.
- NetBase now **carries its own copy of phpseclib 3 under its own name**. Nextcloud ships version 2, which cannot read an Ed25519 or ECDSA key and has no SCP. Previously the newer library arrived by accident, when some unrelated app happened to bundle it, so whether a modern key worked depended on what else you had installed.

### Fixes worth naming

- Reordering the tool list **stopped the whole sidebar from working**.
- **“Act as root” did nothing** for a saved SSH connection.
- **whois returned nothing for a .jp domain.** JPRS does not write `Label: value` like other registries, and one pattern expected LF line endings where a socket sends CRLF — the test passed while the real thing failed.
- Choosing Telnet **left the port at 22**.
- Entering the master key **did nothing** , and its prompt appeared behind the dialog asking for it.
- After an upload **the file list did not refresh**.
- The “Run command” button beside a saved SSH connection **did nothing at all**.
- SCP read a file’s permissions too small, and a filename containing a space lost its first word.

Thank you both — the reports and the patience shaped this release. I will post here again when it is published.

probably just my tired ol’ brain failing, but could you point me in the right direction? checked the entire menu with no sign of local shell option/app…

by the way, you can spin up a local Nextcloud snap in minutes, run tests and remove completely after testing, see:
