Need help enabling file-based logging for audit purposes

I have no support/technical question and have seen the support category. (Be aware that direct support questions will be deleted.)

Which general topic do you have

Hello Nextcloud community,

I’m running Nextcloud at my domain (cloud.geongroup.de) and I’m trying to set up audit logging. When I go to Admin → Logging in the web UI, I see this message:

“File-based logging must be enabled to access logs from the Web UI. If you feel this is an error, please verify log_type in your config.php and check the Nextcloud Administration Manual.”

I need help with:

  1. How can I access and modify my config.php file to enable file-based logging?
  2. What exact changes do I need to make to the config.php file?
  3. Do I need to modify file permissions or create a log file?

I want to set up proper audit logging to track user activities. I’ve already enabled the Admin Audit app in the web interface.

Any guidance on enabling file-based logging would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Here s the documentation for it. The logfiles location are dependant on how you installed nextcloud. VM, AiO, zip file, other means of setup.
