Move Subdirectory to Root

My apologies in advance for my ignorance, this is my first time working with Apache and MySQL.

I am running Ubuntu Server 18.04.4 with Apache2 and MariahDB following the Linux Installation Instructions. I have the site completely up and running; however, I would like to move the site from drive.example.com/nextcloud to drive.example.com. I am having some issues finding information how I would go about making this transition and if I need to make any serious changes to make this happen. This is a fresh installation with no deadline to get it up and running; if needed, it would not be the end of the world to start fresh if it would be the cleanest path.

Thank you all in advance!

Copy all youre files to the directory of drive.example.com.

cp /location/of/drive.example.com/nextcloud /new/location/of/drive.example

Then go to config/config.php, and edit:

'datadirectory' => '/location/of/youre/new/location/data',

'overwrite.cli.url' => 'https://drive.example.com',

Then everything should work.

When everything is working on the new location:

rm -rf /location/of/drive.example.com/nextcloud

Thanks for the reply thijssie85! I tried this but a couple of items had originally stopped me from moving forward as I had thought I was doing something wrong. Thank you for the help. The reason that I had originally posted was due to an internal server error that would show up when I attempted this move. Your post reminded me that I needed to add permissions for www-data in the new location to have it work.

One item I am hoping you might also be able to help with: after the move, Pretty URLs broke. I changed the variables to:

'overwrite.cli.url' => 'http://drive.example.com',
'htaccess.RewriteBase' => '/',

and re-ran the command:

sudo -u www-data php /var/www/newlocation/occ maintenance:update:htaccess

to no avail. Any thoughts I can do?

Thanks again!

Can you show me the apache config and the .htaccess?

Are these the files you are looking for?

/etc/apache2/apache2.conf
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/ for detailed information about
# the directives and /usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian about Debian specific
# hints.
#
#
# Summary of how the Apache 2 configuration works in Debian:
# The Apache 2 web server configuration in Debian is quite different to
# upstream's suggested way to configure the web server. This is because Debian's
# default Apache2 installation attempts to make adding and removing modules,
# virtual hosts, and extra configuration directives as flexible as possible, in
# order to make automating the changes and administering the server as easy as
# possible.

# It is split into several files forming the configuration hierarchy outlined
# below, all located in the /etc/apache2/ directory:
#
#	/etc/apache2/
#	|-- apache2.conf
#	|	`--  ports.conf
#	|-- mods-enabled
#	|	|-- *.load
#	|	`-- *.conf
#	|-- conf-enabled
#	|	`-- *.conf
# 	`-- sites-enabled
#	 	`-- *.conf
#
#
# * apache2.conf is the main configuration file (this file). It puts the pieces
# together by including all remaining configuration files when starting up the
#   web server.
#
# * ports.conf is always included from the main configuration file. It is
# supposed to determine listening ports for incoming connections which can be
#   customized anytime.
#
# * Configuration files in the mods-enabled/, conf-enabled/ and sites-enabled/
# directories contain particular configuration snippets which manage modules,
# global configuration fragments, or virtual host configurations,
#   respectively.
#
# They are activated by symlinking available configuration files from their
# respective *-available/ counterparts. These should be managed by using our
#   helpers a2enmod/a2dismod, a2ensite/a2dissite and a2enconf/a2disconf. See
# their respective man pages for detailed information.
#
# * The binary is called apache2. Due to the use of environment variables, in
# the default configuration, apache2 needs to be started/stopped with
#   /etc/init.d/apache2 or apache2ctl. Calling /usr/bin/apache2 directly will not
# work with the default configuration.

Yes, that are the files :slight_smile:
Can you make:

'overwrite.cli.url' => 'http://drive.example.com',

to with a / at the end

'overwrite.cli.url' => 'http://drive.example.com/',

And put in youre apache

<Directory /var/www/newlocation>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Require all granted
</Directory>

sudo systemctl restart apache2.service

Cool!

I am assuming you wanted me to make the overwrite.cli.url change in the config.php file. I also made the requested change in the apache2.conf file, ran the maintenance:update:htaccess command and restarted apache unfortunately to no avail. Anything else I can change?

Maybe silly but do yoy flush youre cache in youre browser, of use a browser that you never used for youre NC install.

Unfortunately did not resolve. I even attempted from a completely different computer than I have been troubleshooting on and it exhibits the same behavior.

I believe I figured it out, at least it is working. Instead of the suggested
AllowOverride None
I changed it to
AllowOverride All
and it began working. Unless this is not recommended, I believe it is fixed. Thank you again for your help @thijssie85!
