Mobile App Features not what expected

I’m new to NextCloud. I installed the mobile app on my Google Pixel 10 pro XL and am very disappointed in the lack of features that are available. I am on the go the majority of the day and rely heavily on my mobile device for communication, collaboration, emails, and so forth. I may need someone to educate me on all of the features on the mobile app and more importantly, HOW TO GET THEM. NextCloud unfortuantly will be very limited in my arsonal if I can’t have a funtioning app.

So you installed the ā€œNextcloudā€ app. Understand that that app is only to manage and view your Files data from your Nextcloud instance.

If you want to view, for example, you Calendar data, you will need to install a Calendar app (there is no native Nextcloud calendar app for Android). There are several to choose from. You’ll also need DAVx5 to be the go-between that calendar app and your NC.

Besides the ā€˜Nextcloud’ (files only) app, there is also a Notes app. Possibly a couple more but I don’t use any others.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. So basically what I’m hearing is NextCloud is designed more for people that sit in a cubical all day long and not for people that are constantly mobile. I understand the why because it is all about the money and companies need to be able to use the resources that they have wisely. Sad because I would be willing to pay for a fully-featured app that includes notifications, document editing with real time collaboration, and so forth. The last thing that I want to do is install 4 different apps. I guess I lack a lot of understanding. How many business people send and recieve emails through their phone on a daily basis? It’s hard to fully commit to a platform in this day of age, where you can’t even send and recieve emails on the go. I love NextCloud and am trying everything I can to embrace it but they sure don’t make it easy by lacking those very basic features. I hope I am wrong and if there is anyone reading this post right now please educate me and point me in the right direction.

I think you may want to look at something else such as Proton. NC isn’t an all-in-one single app.

Also you need to be fairly proficient at networking operations to maintain a NC effectively.

If I was looking for what you seem to want it’d be something like Proton. Email, calendar, drive, document editing.

Ahhh ok. I like being able to self-host. I own two Ugreen NAS devices, a DXP2800 and a DXP4800 plus. I have a Proton email account, calendar, and everyting under the sun but I can’t seem to intergrate it into my NextCloud Instance. I have three different NextCloud instances on three different machines to run experiments without messing up my ā€œrealā€ instance. I also have some VM’s.

Once I discovered Portainer, I find performing updates on NextCloud rather simple and painless. I just love the platform of NextCloud, the look, the feel, and knowing that it is all on my own server. Privacy has never been a huge concern of mine but I just love self-hosting and learning how to install and use open-source programs.

I appreciate what your saying and I think once I come to an understanding of the limitations of nextCloud and accept it, I’ll be much happier.

I’m doing my best to get away from Google but it’s hard becasue of all of the seemless intergration it offers without a hickup or thinking. It’s all on autopilot

Sent you a pm.

I have a similar situation. I am not using NC for work. I work from home, so I am never away from my work laptop. I want to use NC for personal use. I like the idea of NC Office replacing my Google Workspaces account. File access is fine, but I want to be able to create new files and edit existing files. My issue is that my personal computer is an old Surface Pro 3 that can’t run Windows 11, and is old enough that it wont run Linux well either. So what I am planning to do is to use Dex on my Samsung phone as my primary computer. I have ordered a NexDock that I should have in a few weeks. I have tried using NC while using Dex and I can open files to view (as stated above), but I have no options to edit them. And creating a new file seems to hang. Is there any way that I can create and edit files while using Dex? The issue seems to be that the app is an android app. Would it be an option to use the browser interface instead if I use the desktop version? I did try that but it didn’t seem to help, but I thought maybe I am doing something wrong. Any help that anyone can give me would be appreciated.

One further thought that I have. I am trying to do this with NC Office. Would what I am trying to do work if I used OpenOffice instead? If I am not mistaken I can install OpenOffice within my NextCloud; right?

Thanks for your help.

Well it depends what version of the Surface Pro 3 you are using. There was different Versions on the market (Surface Pro 3 – Spezifikationen und Features).

Surface Pro 3 uses the 4th generation IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ processor (i3, i5 or i7). Those are fine with Linux. The Problem would be wich Option you have:

  • 64 GB or 128 GB storage with 4 GB RAM or
  • 256 GB or 512 GB storage with 8 GB RAM

The Problem woould be the 4 GB RAM. So only a Version with 8 GB RAM would work smoothly

Thanks for your reply. My Surface is the high end model. I know that Linux can run on it, but not well. It tends to run slow (I have tried Linux Mint). But that is not really my problem. I don’t want to continue using the Surface. I want to use the NexDock with my phone running Dex. That means that I need an Office Suite that will allow me to create and edit files using andriod. Is there a way to do that with NextCloud Office? Or does OpenOffice on NextCloud allow that?

I’m not clear what you’re getting at: Nextcloud supports those things on mobile, both via mobile web and various apps.

The last thing that I want to do is install 4 different apps.

What difference does it make? Even Google has different apps for different bits of their platform (Docs, Drive, Sheet, Meet, Keep, Calendar, Gmail, Photos, Contacts, etc.)

You may want to open a dedicated thread and fill out the support template since it sound like there may be something else wrong, but we’d need further details to assist. For one, what type of files?

Yes. If it didn’t work that way either, yes, may be something else going on. For example if you’re trying to open some type of Office document, but maybe your Nextcloud Office setup (server-side) isn’t quite right. Might just be a matter of troubleshooting in a dedicated support thread as noted above.

Nextcloud is a web app. Just create a home screen folder with the critical pages you require and add the login to your pw manager.

Either install Collabora Online CODE or OnlyOffice on your Nextcloud server.
OpenOffice is poor maintained (last update in year 2023) and cannot run within Nextcloud.
LibreOffice is the most recent and full maintained OpenOffice.Org-based ā€œofflineā€ office suite and can directly access to documents in Nextcloud via WebDAV.

Its designed to be an integrated webapp. Just use it in a browser, it all works fine, even on mobile.

I just ā€˜install’ the dashboard link and do just fine.

An update on my issue. I was trying to get Collabora Office to run using the built in app on TrueNAS. Apparently, that is known to not work well. The preferred method is to install Collabora a a sperate container on TrueNAS, and then configure it within NextCloud as a separate server. I have done that and after struggling with permissions and the communication between the three servers I have it working correctly for me.

Now I am struggling with the android app. I want to configure an automatic backup of a folder for OpnCamera (DCIM/OpenCamera) to the Photos app in NextCloud. But I don’t have the right permissions. Apparently, the Play Store version of the app does not have all of the permissions needed to do this, specifically ā€œAll Files Accessā€. My options are to use a third party sync tool or sideload the application from outside of the Play Store. I don’t like either option. Are there any other options that I can try? Anyone have any recommendation?

Sorry, but my glass ball is not working perfectly anymore.

What version of Nextcloud app do you use?
How are the settings in the app’s configuration?
