Memories - How are is timeline sorted?

I copied a bunch of files into my nextcloud photo collection and noticed that some of them are showing up as the day I copied them and not the day the photo was taken.

I took a look at the meta data and I’m seeing this:

File Modification Date/Time     : 2025:08:27 09:00:00-04:00
File Access Date/Time           : 2025:08:30 17:09:32-04:00
File Inode Change Date/Time     : 2025:08:29 07:25:06-04:00
Modify Date                     : 2018-12-22 11:55:08
Exif Version                    : 0220
Date/Time Original              : 2018-12-22 11:55:08
Create Date                     : 2018-12-22 11:55:08

It appears that the file modification time is being used and not the date/time original.
I’m looking for confirmation or if there is anything I can do to change that?

It would be interesting to know whether there are any differences in metadata, EXIF data, file format, or something else compared to the files that are showing up correctly.
