Local External storage Active Directory user

Nextcloud version (eg, 20.0.5): 20.0.6
Operating system and version (eg, Ubuntu 20.04): Arch Linux 5.4.91
Apache or nginx version (eg, Apache 2.4.25): 2.4.46
PHP version (eg, 7.4): 7.4.14

The issue you are facing:
I’ve been trying to connect an external storage which is local and have it map to the users name directory. The users are coming from active directory. In the external storage line I have /mnt/Disk1/Users/$user. The user is the owner of the directory (as the server is joined to the domain) and they have access to this directory through SMB on their Windows computers. Just wondering if the $user directive works when connecting to a local external storage? I can’t see anything in the logs when it tries to connect unless I’m looking in the wrong place.

Edit: I can get it to work if I make it a SMB external storage but I would like to have it just directly connect instead of through Samba if possible since both are on the same machine.

Thanks.
Stephen
