I want to run Nextcloud on my Intel i5 NUC running Win 11.
The NUC has some internal storage but most of the storage are external USB disks.
I currenly use my NUC for:
a] Kodi to play video’s on my attached TV
b] Store files I backup over my LAN. As a backup strategy, some of the attached USB storage rotates.
I want:
c] Make files on/attached to my NUC availble for personal use.
d] Stream video.
e] Host my own Bitwarden vault (low priority wish)
c - extra details
- I don’t like copying using a webbrower.
- I like using FTP for transfering files because it can queue and resume.
- Copy to Android phone or Windows laptop.
- Private use, so needs to be safe.
d - extra details
- I own a copy of Emby which can stream my video’s, but I’m willing to use/try other software.
I’m aware Emby isn’t part of Nextcloud, but I’m just trying to explain my intended use.
My NUC is behind a router/firewall and Nextcloud should be visible from Internet
I have zero Linux experience. I’m not a Windows guru but above average I would say.
a) hope you mean sftp.
b) no. nextcloud is not good for. because either you use the desktop client or the web gui. but (s)ftp is not a good idea. (unless you know what your doing.)
nextcloud stores files not just in /home/user/nextcloudfiles. but has it’s own way to store files and keep some meta data in it’s database. that makes it unconfortable NOT to use the client or webgui. (not impossible.)

Yeah sftp, force of habit, I’m from FTP times

That sounds bad, because I “regularly” access the files over my LAN and am looking for a simple way to share over internet. Locally everything works as I need it already.
Then fear Nextcloud isn’t for me.
a wireguard vpn is no option?

I’ve NordVPN and going to fiddle a bit with their Meshnet.
Thanks for your answers.
You can test Nextcloud with a free account in the internet and your test data. Works like Nextcloud in your LAN.
And yes, i also think it is not for you.
