Not true. Uploading a 100GB file isn’t an issue on my NUC running NC32 (Ubuntun, apache). Please search the forum as this has been discussed many times over the last years.

Who said that, someone from the forum? This is a community forum run by volunteers. No one here wants to or can certify your environment, nor do they have any authority to tell you what is and isn’t supported (except perhaps employees of Nextcloud GmbH who drop by from time to time). If you have an Enterprise subscription, ask your contact at Nextcloud GmbH.

All apps disabled after patching, i.e. even minor versions? That has never happened to me. I don’t know if it has anything to do with how you do scaling, and I don’t know if T-Online uses “workarounds” to keep their service running. But the software, and the apps generally work, and at least for me, apps are only disabled if they are not compatible with a new major version of Nextcloud.

these are enterprise-problems. Afaik (from hearsay) you can easily stay with an older version of NC if you like, having an enterprise subscription. So no need to upgrade to a version which doesn’t (yet) support your core-apps (though the “feat.” apps should get new versions, as well)

i vote for: leaving enterpriseproblems to the professional guys from NC inc.

That was a (rhetorical) question for @MaxiW

Again, I’ve never had this problem with minor updates, but yes, with major updates, not all apps are compatible from day one, mainly third-party ones. These are then disabled.

However, part of enterprise IT is also having a test environment. No IT professional in an enterprise would just blindly click on an update button. There are engineering teams that test updates in a test environment first, especially when it comes to rolling out a new major release.

So, in this case, we’re probably not talking about ‘enterprise’ in the true sense of the word either. 😉

👍

And for the community part, share details of the setup, report the bugs, then people can look into it, and potentially solve problems. If not, it is kind of waste of time for everyone. I’m out here.

Yeah, yeah, I read the sales pitch. (-: You got any input on the topics I raised. I already knew that Nextcloud thinks it is enterprise software …

At the moment I am not behind it, so I can hardly convince my co-workers. O:-)

We run NC client on an i7, 32 gig of ram, nvmw ssd. i don’t think it should be such a bottleneck that syncing changes from remote causes folder to be deleted remotely. That feels more like a software-side hickup. other than that, with the performance, we are fine.

Yeah, that is what I figure. It looks like NC is trying to do everything, but none of it is really done. I wanna focus on the file sharing and I did not ask for Talk and Office and Decks and … maybe NC is just not the right way for us.

> [@JimmyKater](#):

> I bet if NC was that piece of crap

Come on, what is happening? Where did I say “piece of crap”? Why you tryin’ to derail the conversation? I raised concrete technical problems we have. Why not respond to them. Instead of trying to open a “we against them”-line and claiming people badmouth “your” poor software?

This post was not to find solutions to technical difficulties. I would have chosen another category for that. This was to get a reality check on my perception of NC and what people think and say about it.

For the technical side of things: we are in fact evaluating SMB shares on a ZFS right now (versioning, backups, ACLs). It does not have offline sync, but … as that mostly causes problems for us in NC anyway. 🤷‍♂️

That’s perfectly acceptable. In that case, I wouldn’t touch Nextcloud with a ten-foot pole.

If SMB shares are sufficient for you needs, I would care even less about Nextcloud (or any Cloud software).
That is like me complaining in the Ferrari Forum about their hard suspension and gas guzzling, when a Toyota Corolla as my daily would probably be a the better fit 😉

> [@Peter\_Pan](#):

Not SMB, but clients themselves do. Windows calls this offline files. But be aware, this is opening up another can of worms…

hi
If you want to focus solely on file sharing, “Seafile” is for you. I used it for years, and it’s top-notch for sharing and synchronization. But I needed a calendar, contacts, Talk… the complete opposite of what you offer. So for the last two years, I’ve been using Nextcloud, and it suits me very well.

i wouldn’t say its ‘not done’ as all the core apps work quite well. Sure, some of the 3rd party apps are iffy at times, but the main ones are pretty reliable too.

I just meant above that its more than ‘just sharing of local files’ and if you don’t need all the rest, its easier just to use NFS or something. But if you need a complete ‘suite’ NC is a great thing.

simply said: no you didn’t. you vented off. nothing more. you posting doesn’t meet any requirements of a call for help. Posting your thread under “general” clearly shows that this wasn’t meant as a call for support. You even checked the mark asking you directly if this posting was a support-case.

> [@Peter\_Pan](#):
>
> Why not respond to them

maybe we would respond (and some of us even tried) - but you refrain from giving out details. so some ppl here might think: you’re a frustrated user.

so yeah maybe NC isn’t meant for you guys. OK. You can chose another software suite (some had been mentioned here already). Good luck.

If you have a technical problem open a thread under support and fill in the needed details. and then let’s see what’s gonna happen.

Well now, experiences differ. I’ve had NC installed and configured and operated _since there was an NC to operate_ for 100s of users spread across multiple offices and project sites. With terabytes of files. Have there been issues? Sure, but then again I’ve installed and operated software for enterprises from any number of suppliers and the one thing they all have in common is that they had issues, particularly in early versions.

But as others have noted all the issues you outline have solutions. The biggest instance I can access right now to check spec has 26TB of content, a mix of tiny (few kb) and large files (multiple G) and approx 500 users. The users are mostly LDAP/AD auth, some using sync client, some using direct web access. This all runs on a virtualised infrastructure with iscsi storage for content. The DB and frontend run on separate VMs; the frontend runs behind a reverse proxy and has 4G RAM, 8 vcpu, the DB VM has 4G RAM, 6 vcpu. The setup runs fine. For the record worth noting the hosts these VMs are on are old, \>5 years and the iscsi stores are SATA, old and shared with other applications. It runs fine. Could it be faster? Sure. Faster hosts, dedicated ISCSI SSD storage. All costs money but would improve performance.

This instance is not NC GMBH supported.

We have been using NC for over eight years, originally for file share and syncing. Home workers and mobile are able to access company documents easily (approx. half millions files).

Setting up shares for external clients has mostly been okay. The main issue we faced was the changing interface for creating shares requiring new training.

We added Talk when it became a stable app, and have been using this for over six years. That came in very useful when the pandemic hit. This has been far more reliable than Skype, Teams or Zoom (which some of our users tried).

For most of our experience, software updates have just worked without issues. Testing is the key (as it should be in any IT environment).

On the whole I still recommmend NC if it fits your needs. We have tried and evaluated many cloud sharing environments. The main reasons we stuck with NC was the Open Source nature and on-premises storage. If these are important then use NC.
