iPhone — Auto Sync not working?

I just got an iPhone after using android for many many years. I have noticed even though I have auto upload setup and such Nextcloud refuses to auto upload photos unless I open the app and go to More -> Transfers. The app icon will hold a count of how many items are “waiting” to be uploaded.

So is this normal that I have to open the app every time for my photos to “auto” upload ?
