Is there a way to fix the reduction of the image resolution in the automated photo upload? That is a very annoying issue especially since the ios app works otherwise so well.

Might it be possible that the monitored behavior is caused by incorrectly setting a parameter on your iPhone as described here:
It shouldn’t caused by this because nextcloud jpeg versions are much higher than thumbnails in size and quality. There is something else here. I compare original with nextcloud jpeg and difference is almost night and day, especially in colors and details when zoomed-in
