Besides WEBDAV, is there a way to integrate the NextCloud into applications, e.g. Office, as a storage location? If so, how does it work?

Office Online can used used with WOPI.
Alternative you can use a self hosted Collabora Online or OnlyOffice instance with Nextcloud.
