Thanks so much

If you have root- or sudo-Access → yes
ahh this explains it. My plan doesnt allow for this. thanks for the speedy reply.
So my next step is to find a server which does. Would you have a recommendation, i want to be able to access contact via graphene profiles and laptop. much appreciated
Since hostgator is in the US, you want most likely a Provider there. So i have no recommendations for you since i am in Germany. But to start with Nextcloud you may choose a provider with preinstalled Nextcloud Server, who will also care for backups and updates.
You don’t need root or sudo access. However, assuming you’re using one of their web hosting plans, you do need SSH/command line access and the ability to run PHP commands from the command line interface. It would also be beneficial to have the ability to set up cron jobs for Nextcloud’s cron.php.
If the above prerequisites are met, I’d say you should be able to install Nextcloud, and then use its basic functions, such as file storage/sharing, calendar and contacts, reasonably well.
However, you should be aware that things like Nextcloud Office, if you can set it up with the built-in apps, are not really performant on a web hosting service. Other advanced features, such as Talk with High Performance Backend and other more demanding features, won’t work on a web hosting service at all, unless, maybe if you host the respective backends externally.
Brilliant! Ive managed to link the server via Putty and access SSH/command line
Whats my next step from here?
How/where do I to set up cron jobs for Nextcloud’s cron.php
Step by step pointers really help, im a total novice getting into this but Im determined ![]()
Im wanting it for contacts/calendar ~ basic file sharing. Thanks so much
Unfortunately, I can’t provide step-by-step instructions, as I haven’t used shared web hosting services in years. Off the top of my head, though, you would roughly need to do the following steps, most of which can probably be done via HostGator’s admin panel:
Alternatively, if this sounds too involved, you might want to consider a managed Nextcloud service. In that case, you don’t have to install anything yourself or worry about updates, as everything is handled by the provider.
A very good value-for-money option is, for example, Hetzner Storage Share: Managed nextcloud: cheap cloud storage
I’m not affiliated with Hetzner in any way; I just think their offer is very good. Personally, I would choose this over self-hosting Nextcloud on a generic shared web hosting platform (which strictly spekaing isn’t really “self-hosting” either) any day.
