External storage on fritz.box routing to nextcloud / "empty reply from server"

Hi all,
I’ve added a USB Drive to my fritz.box
Trying to establish a route to nextcloud I run into a pretty obscure error:
In Nextcloud’s “external storages” menu, when I enter a name OTHER than “PrivateFTP” for the folder connected to the drive, it won’t even show up.
When naming it “PrivateFTP”, it does show up, however I get the following message when trying to open the folder:

"Fehler beim Einbinden des externen Speichers

Es ist ein Fehler mit folgender Meldung aufgetreten:Leere Antwort vom Server erhalten. Do you want to review mount point config in personal settings page?" (Ja/Nein)"

(Translated as best as I can:)

“Error upon including the external drive.
An error with the following message occured: Empty reply from server.
Do you want to review mount point config in personal settings page?” (yes/no)
Hitting “yes” leads me to the settings page.
The local nextcloud client tells me, the “server replied: service unavailable”.
Also: “Server reports No ETag” (whatever THAT means…)
However, when using an FTP client, I can access the files without any problem.

So … what can I do?

The Basics

Admittedly, I know very little of my nextcloud:
Nextcloud version : 30.0.8
Operating system and version : Hosted by Strato.de
Apache or nginx version : Dito…
(If anyone can point out where I can find those values, I can provide the info here)
PHP version : 8.2

  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • immediately upon the first configuration
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • manually, some decade ago or so :-/
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • no

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

Which name do you mean, “Folder name” or “Configuration?”

I’m using SFTP (or FTPS, as Nextcloud puts it), of course! :slight_smile:

Not sure, whether I get your question.

  • Folder Name
  • This is currently set to “PrivateFTP”. Which is leads to the error message above. “MyCloud”, “abc”, “test” did not show up at all.

You should know what your FRITZ!Box offers and what your Nextcloud uses. SFTP has absolutely nothing to do with FTPS. Post more details.

Fritz.box offers FTPS / access via port 41482
The checkbox for “allow ftps only” is active
Also, the access to the fritzbox works via a dyndns name provider.
Via an FTP client I can access the usb drives file system without flaw by entering the dyndns domain name, so this works (in my eyes :smiley: )

Nextcloud offers Access via FTPS, too - which is in use.
The “configuration” part says (in order):
host: mydomainname.v6.rocks
remote folder: /
secure ftps:// (checked)
Username (as entered at the fritzbox)
Password (as entered at the fritzbox)

What else info / details do you need?

Seems all ok. Maybe a problem with ssl certificate? What about Nextcloud logs?
