Summary of the issue you are facing:

[Errors in the log

Failed to get an iterator for log entries: Error while opening /var/log/nextcloud.log

Can’t rotate the log

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

PASTE HERE

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

PASTE

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

PASTE HERE

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

Without your config/etc we can only guess.

Based on your path not being the default one and it being in a system location (/var/log/nextcloud.log), my guess is permissions.

You could just use the default log location (within your Nextcloud data directory), by removing the custom log path.

…or, if you want to have have Nextcloud log file under /var/log, you should place it in a subfolder, e.g. /var/log/nextcloud, and give this folder the correct permissions:

Example for OSs, where the web user is www-data (Debian/Ubuntu based systems):

mkdir -p /var/log/nextcloud
chown -R www-data:www-data /var/log/nextcloud

And then also change the path accordingly in config.php, either manually or via occ:

occ config:system:set logfile --value="/var/log/nextcloud/nextcloud.log"

-rw-r-----. 1 apache apache 22057308 Feb 13 19:50 nextcloud.log

This is owned by apache server. Rocky use apache and not www-data

What is mend by iteration???

The problem is caused by an update a view versions ago.

Assuming the file is located in the /var/log directory, it is possible that the apache user has permission to write to the existing file, but not to rename it or create new files in the /var/log directory. This would explain why Nextcloud can write to the current log file, but cannot rotate it, as indicated by the error message.

This is also why I suggested using a dedicated subfolder rather than placing the file directly in /var/log.

I have set it back to the default directory. It works normal.

I did it to keep my srv/www backups small.

The error is gone and logs are shown. I have a new error that seems to do with admin avatar not find or so. I didn’t use it.
